Cannons doing too much damge

Yup, it’s the only one largely unnaffected by plywood bug 2.0 due to 0,001mm sensitivity.
On the other hand, in protection analysis weird things happen, so I’m not entirely sure!

Looks devastating.

I doubt the low filler, thick walled shells like Svak can do anything comparable. But ingame they’re op.

The outline of the shell is wrong, though. Weird…

I frankly don’t really care what the real life damage was like. This is a game and cannon damage should be tuned for best gameplay.

Current damage is tuned for duelist bros, which is like 0,01% of the playerbase.

HEI shell from Flak 30/38, not MG151/20 Mineshell.

The current damage is the most popular with the vast majority of the playerbase. Never seen any posts about cannons doing no damage or realshatter being ass since the last update to them.

Meanwhile, the second most upvoted post of the month on the War thunder subreddit:

Which is not really about cannon damage, and more about the limitations of the damage models.

Plus, cannons sometimes doing no damage is not an issue anymore, so why would there be posts about it? This is compared to the previously endless stream of “[cannon] does no damage anymore” posts.

Vast majority of playerbase has absolutely NO IDEA about what is actually good for them/good for gameplay and don’t even know how the game works.
For low braincell.count demographic “plane go boom” is expected, as they don’r even know better. They are convinced IRL WW2 planes were like paper, but I’ve talked about it already.

And once again, there’s 0 benefit to current situation, as the damage is EXTREMELY inconsistent, with single shot ranging from.instadeath to nothing depending on the shell type and plywood bug 2.0, gun balance being just inexistent, ammo variety being inexistent (one just wants HE), and already non-meta planes getting double whammy. And what do we get in exchange? Duelling br0s can end their duel on the first hit, instead of working towards 2nd firing opportunity, so they can have more duels in the same timeframe.

It’s the same thing. Cannon damage depends entirely on the damage model and its limitations. Because they can’t manage localized damage properly, they resort to artificial workarounds that end up being excessive. My tail still snaps off from a 20mm round hitting an unimportant section, or its small fragments somehow manage to snap a surface/stabiliizer off (just like a 7.7mm would). That’s still broken cannon damage.

I see you think in black and white. Can we conceive of a balanced and realistic option that doesn’t necessarily involve either “no damage” or “inflated damage”?

He has to present the “no damage” as the only alternative, so he makes his EXTREMIST position sound reasonable. A very old trick.

Even the CCs/youtubers who are quite skilled at air battles thought unreliable cannons was terrible for gameplay.

Yeah, it’s not like we have a hitpoint bar, so of course damage isn’t 100% consistent.

I’ve shown several times that having a small number of AP shells is very advantageous.

Non-meta planes can actually get kills now, instead of perhaps being non-meta because when you do get on someone, all you see is Hit Hit Hit.

It isn’t, because 7.7mms can also experience these issues.

Would that be more enjoyable than now? Very unlikely.

As FeetPics has shown several times: this thread was started with the goal of making “no damage” a reality, since it was started at one of the lowest points for the cannons mentioned, and that damage was still deemed too high. Therefore, the “proper” amount of damage would be even lower than the times that elicited constant, endless posts about cannon damage being too low.

Tail and wing snaps are crazy and should be toned down in general. It doesn’t match old guncam footage and planes totally disintegrating cause of short burst cal50 or whatever is just over the top.

Another issue is exploding ordnance. Over the last year(s) shooting down planes became too easy. I can’t express my dislike how easy it is to shot down bombers. A short burst and they break into pieces. A short cal50 burst and all their bombs in the bay are immeadely exploding.

what do you mean “duelist bros” who are you talking about

There are some guys who duels like, a lot.
They generally think that duel should end with 1st shot landed, since Air RB controls mean getting a good stall/snap shot is one of the best ways to show off skill in 1 v 1.
They treat everything that doesn’t fit their vision of playing the game (that is, dueling) as bad for the game, even if it’s greatly beneficial for normal gameplay. FeetPics is the best example, he’s been trolling this thread for quite some time.

Of course the game would be way better if consistent gunnery was rewarded and some planes were tougher than others. Current situation where being bigger is 100% bad, because whether you’re flying a Zero or 7,5t Do-335, your wing will snap to a single 20mm, is just pathological.

(a subjective opinion)

I don’t do duels unless it’s with friends, and even those are very rare.

I don’t understand why we have three different game modes (Arcade, Realistic, and Simulation) if they’re all ultimately using the same inflated damage model with short time-to-kill. Shouldn’t fast-paced combat be limited exclusively to Arcade?

I think game would benefit greatly from a higher time-to-kill, and not just because it’s the most historically accurate approach. A higher time-to-kill is what best enables what we all expect from air combat simulator: engaging in that aerial ballet called a dogfight, where the one who actually flies better wins—the one who best knows how to manage their machine’s energy through a progressive attrition of the enemy. However, it seems this is being lost in favor of an absurdly fast-paced game that reduces combat to a simple matter of quick reflexes—who shoots first or aims better wins, just like typical shooters—where there is no room for tactical depth, energy maneuvering, playstyle, and of course, no room for great comebacks.

I wonder if these guys would demand WW1 biplanes in some other game to also 1shot each other due to “better gameplay” and if the “community would demand it”, because why the hell not?

I think this game could absolutely get the insta-gib mode Unreal Tournament style, with cannons replaced with ASMD Shockrifles for added immersion. This way everyone would have “balanced weapons”, big planes would just be shafted slightly more and duelist br0s and Percussion would finally no longer have to suffer through anyone surviving getting hit even once.
