Cannon inconsistencies: RealShatter, Skill Issue, [insert nation here] bias, or bad luck?

I’m a relatively old player, been playing since 2015 on and off, and I’ve been revisiting some of the low/mid tier props, flying out from 4.0 to 6.3 because of the awful “gameplay” of Top Tier (ARHs and missile combat ruined skilled combat, fight me.).

I remember German mine shells on the MG 151s hitting like absolute trucks at all times. I remember them getting a little funky from when RealShatter messed up the first time, but they got reverted back into the realm of usability. That isn’t the case nowadays though, as it seems like MG151s are really inconsistent with their damage. I can’t link a video because my recording software is buns, but I was flying a Bf 109 G-6, Univ. 13mm and Air 20mm, and I was getting nothing but hits (not even a crit) while squaring off against some La-7Bs. Most I got was a crit on one of them after hitting him in the engine. And that’s when I was able to hit them, with MG 151s being so slow. Hell, any attempt to hit past 600m was a lot more of a gamble than I’d cared to take.

I didn’t think too much of it, maybe thinking other cannons were similarly disadvantaged. F4U-4B and F8F-1B. American M2s shred. They shred. High velocity, high cyclic rate. More likely to get crits (even to body).

Okay, maybe another. Let’s give Russia a try! B-20S/M, Shvaks. Unholy in FI-T. High velocity, high cyclic rate. Same thing, significantly more crits and severes than hits if I don’t outright kill them in one burst.

Hispanos. Hot damn. Same thing. High velocity, high cyclic rate, though they do cause more hits than the M2s or Russian 20s.

Are MG151s kinda bad now? Or am I blinded by nostalgia and remember them being better than they actually were?

(No offense, ragebait, or community is intended, I am purely looking for factual and accurate responses.)

Realshitter, thats the thing causing the problems and the incompetence of the devs who refuse to fix bug reports from two and a half years ago of cannons doing no damage, sadly its not a you-thing.

Edit: almost 3 years*

I dont play that much props these days but in my experience with the Hispano. Its all about the belts. Some rounds do consistant damage others dont do any.

Combine with the very limited damage models. Damage itself can be very very inconsistant. Hits some places will one shot, the exact same hit a few inches away dont do anything

Id typically say that quantity of rounds fired into a target does more damage than the qualtity of the rounds. Which is why US 50 cals just shred

That specific bug report was already fixed over a year ago.
It just wasn’t edited to “Fixed” yet.

@OrphanAnnhilator
German MG151s might not have RealShatter enabled still, which will cause lower damage.

Oh really? Its been fixed and they just forgot?
Care to explain this?

A tremendous fix, worthy of the latest Q&A

Dunno which Spitfire that is off the top of my head, but I know if the belts have garbage rounds in it.

As for the F-100 being resilient to the Hunter’s rounds on the left wing root for a couple rounds, then the engine being destroyed only being counted as a “hit”, then the severe.
It seems the rounds worked for 2 of those engagements, potentially all 3.
Hard to say if all 3 were high damage without seeing his damage model.

All I know is I haven’t ran air targets on my own Hunter F58A because I felt default was enough damage.
I also know that the F-100 can be surprisingly resilient.

German ammo was constantly nerfed over years, no matter which caliber.
151 are the worst 20mm in the game actually, years ago they shredded everything.
Mk103 belts are nerfed to hell because GRB players whined a lot about the HVAP belt.
50mm Mk 214A has no useable belt at all, airbelt is stealth, a joke.
15mm Cermet ammo…I can’t remember they worked at all. 47mm penetration and you can’t kill a medium tank. Every US 20mm stock belt is able to do it with 33mm penetration.

the only consistent output have the 7.92mm MGs over the years.

On the other hand, .50mm today are the best weapons, especially the modern variants. Even from directly rear aspect they do damage like hell. Even more than most 30mm.
I need half the ammo for one kill compared to the past.

Just now I flew a Ta152C-3 and went head-on with a Zero three times, but it only took trash damage that didn’t even set it on fire… What the hell is going on… Seriously.
