The moderators should do what I’ve seen many times before: inform users that they’re closing the post because it’s a duplicate, and include the link to where the discussion should continue. This way, they also revive the original post, which has been forgotten for a while.
If you close it without saying anything at all, it’s because you expect people to stop talking about it.

They often do, its not unreasonable for some to fall through the cracks and ultimately theyre mostly volunteers so dont place your expectations too high
At the very least, moderators should link the thread they want something discussed in. I have seen threads locked down because they were “pretty sure there is an existing thread for it.”
Yes true, and i have alot of posts that ARE COMPLETELY OK WITH NOTHING WRONG IN THEM ( morally speaking ), and they instantly get blocked for ( Inappropriate Content )

If they just redirected or recombines it with an already existing thread that will be more suitable than just closing it.

They are redirecting you in the mod comments.
Merging might be valid, you should be able to ask for it if you want it by contacting the Forum Moderators through a private message.
You can find all the teams and the areas they handle listed here: (Who is who and Reporting Procedure). If you don’t get an answer within a few days you can add more moderators from the list to the original message instead of sending a new message (that way you preserve the date of the message and it doesn’t look like a new request), adding one of the moderators to the message every 2-3 days or so until you get an answer.
Please do not to add the seniors until you have tried all other regular moderators, the Seniors likely won’t answer unless they are added and pinged by the regular moderators but if you’ve added all the regular moderators with no answer then you can add the seniors.
Its ok, Merging should be automatic within some of their rules that related about duplicates subjects before closing them.
And also, i rarely get an answer from them. their support is not that reliable.
