The game mode is called “realistic” and not “simulator,” it has enough realism to not be arcade but not enough realism to be sim.
Besides I don’t wouldn’t be as much as a game changer as people think it would be long term especially when you can still aim third person and use custom sights that easily account for it, average players would adjust to it over time and decent/above average players would be mostly un effected just more of a annoyance

Yes, forcing the gunner sight is one of the things that simulator entails in War Thunder.
Sim , only allows to use specific tanks from specific eras, which in ground rb i incredibly tedious due to having tanks that are captured or lend lease.
Now forcing to use the gunner sight isnt actually a bad idea it would actually make things change away from the zoomer, cod mentality gameplay weve slipped further and further into.
Further, the way scout drones work, the way spotting works and fighting in cities isnt realistic anyways, GRB slowly but surely is sliding more arcade style, just look at air RB its now just basically AAB+, due to any suggestions of realism just being kicked down.
The thing I like most about the gunner sight view is the huge puff of smoke when you fire the gun. If implementing gunner sight is too big a leap, I’d love to have the option to turn on gun smoke when it fires from the boresight view. Currently just watching the round go downrange is kind of lame.
I used this for years in RB, eventually I gave up because all I was doing was making the game harder for myself.
Yup, always have thought this, removes tons of cheeky spots, and makes you second guess your shots.

I mean its realistic, we dont have big red diamonds like in ARB, or AGB, yet can put a camera in the gun barrel.

Honestly they catered so hard to the COD deathmatch only players in ARB that AAB is actually the mode that requires thought about where to go and has multiple objectives to bleed tickets. The objectives/match types are backwards from what you’d expect.
As far as this topic, I don’t have a problem with modules breaking, including barrels, and I’m glad they’re actually going in the direction of having more internal geometry and modules in general. That said I do think gunner sight would be appropriate for GRB. The fact that the meta has made obsolete all but a select group of heavily armored machines aside, I think it is an appropriate type of realism for the style of RB. You still get allied markers and third person camera and such, it’s just to me an extension of controlling the vehicles with more realistic performance. I think more than difficulty hitting weakspots it’s actually gonna do more to reduce the viability of making rolling bush rat tanks since you’d obscure your own viewports.
I don’t think this will do much either way in regard to the fact that as the game stands today armor is only a question of “can you survive machine guns and are you open top” or not. Any armor beyond that is functionally useless. That’s something that would need to be addressed in other ways. We tend to acknowledge that vehicles like St Emil, Archer, etc should be able to get a gun usually at a higher BR because of the sacrifices they make for that. Unfortunately no consideration is paid to the sacrifice in mobility and general ability to be concealed most heavies pay for armor. Of course I think this is really only a big issue starting around 6.0-6.7 as there is still relevant armor below that, but I don’t think it’s good balance to reach a point where all that matters is can you shrug off machine guns and small HE and so anything that’s slow is useless because more armor above that provides zero extra protection.
