To add to this, a non-damaged barrel with a 76mm APC round (from a medium tank):
A barely-damaged barrel from a 76mm APHE round (from a light tank:
A non-damaged barrel from a 40mm AP-T round (from an SPAA, but more-or-less a light tank):
A non-damaged barrel from a 90mm APHE round (from a tank destroyer):
But with the same 90mm round, only a slightly different position:
As you can see, barrel damage is already not consistent.
You guys know that You can play SB where it is normal?
Nothing like that will happen. If we are going to do that then force cocpit view for planes.

Not an equivalent. Tank optics in barrel would be as if players could choose to have all their bullets spawn from the aircraft’s gunsight.

But talking gameplay-wise it is an equivalent.
No. Equivalent to forcing cockpit view would be forcing interior views (or commander’s hatch) for tanks.

Not really.
It would be the same as forcing aircraft to use cocpit view anytime they want to use weapons.
I am in heavy support of this, but they need to make sure that the laser rangefinder eliminates parallax even at close range. Right now, when I try to use the cam thru gunner optic, even when I lase a target, it doesn’t fix the parallax at close range.
This is nightmare when you’re in an Abrams where your whole hull and neck is a weakspot, but you kinda need pixel aim against Russian tanks and German tanks (the window for Russian’s LFP is not that big since a bit too low = it goes thru the floor instead of bouncing inside and hitting the ammo and too high = no pen).
Oh yeah dude, hitting pixel perfect weakpots and peeking between a 2 inch gap is mega fun.
EDIT
Realism =/= Less fun
Having HP bars would be less realistic, but I don’t think you would argue thats a good change for WT, just cuz having to hit crew + components is realistic.
Hugely in favor of gunner sight being forced in GRB. It makes sim way more fun and interesting, and removes lots of cheesy tactics. It would fix many problems in the game, and third person is still there if you need a very silly pixel perfect aim mode.

heavy tanks have left the chat
HP is less fun and less realistic at the same time, though.
Just play Sim if you want gunner view forced.

Just wait until you realize that armour plate can only stop so many heavy hits in close proximity before cracks forms and start to spread. Before the welds crack. Before enough ball bearings in the turret ring are crushed and it stops moving.
Tanks (especially modern ones) are incredibly complicated pieces of engineering, and despite the attempts to make then as robust as possible, there are just so many small, but important parts inside that can break and result in a Mission Kill.
If anything, the HP system is closer to real life than “warthunder-I-can-take-100-hits from 152mm shells and stay in perfect condition as long as they don’t pen” system.

I’d argue it’s not, as at least War Thunder has some modules moduled whereas in an HP system where you hit would essentially not matter.
I know. It was a hyperbole. I do believe that a system that takes into account both mechanisms would be best suited for a tank game.
You seriously play heavy tanks EXPECTING to get shot?
To be completly fair, no one can expect tanks like churchill to exactly flank around the map.

Tanks like churchill, T95, and Maus just suck anyways. They rely soley on frontal armor, but there’s still tanks that can frontally pen them easily, and sometimes they can’t even pen those tanks back.
So yeah, you simply have to play certain tanks and expect to be shot.

Exactly why most REALLY slow tanks are just worthless.
I personally like to play off meta vehicles from time to time.
