The BTR-3E1 during a military parade.
- Basic Description:
- The BTR-3 is an Armored Personnel Carrier developed in 2000 that can be equipped with many different modules/variants to serving different needs. Some of these variants include an ARV, which is equipped with a dozer blade, crane, and winch, the BTR-3E 90 equipped with the 90mm Cockerill turret for direct-fire needs, or one of the newest variants, the BTR-3E1 equipped with the BM-3M “Shturm-M” module. This version is a relatively new model, launched in 2007, features the ZTM-1 30mm Autocannon, the KT-7.62mm Coaxial Machine Gun, a KBA-117 grenade launcher, and a dual Barrier ATGM launcher/system. The turret also is equipped with an electro-optical sighting system and 360-degree Panoramic camera for the Gunner and Commander through the Track-M Fire Control System that offers 3rd-generation thermal imagery and tracking capabilities. This gives the BTR-3 all the capabilities of a modern IFV, with the option of engaging main battle tanks should the need arise. The BTR-3E1 chassis is a standard 8x8 found on many types of APC’s. This chassis is reinforced with Kevlar providing the crew with 360-degree protection from small-caliber weapons and can be fitted with addon armor to protect against 12.7mm rounds. The BTR-3E1 can carry up to 9 personnel, including the 3 required to operate the vehicle, the driver, commander, and gunner. One feature that’s different from the standard BTR-3 and the BTR-3E1 is the new MTU 6R106TD21 Diesel Engine capable of 326hp capable of achieving speeds of over 100km/h. The BTR-3E1 is capable of attaching Bar Armor.
- In terms of ammunition, the ZTM-1 (2A72) and ZTM-2 (2A42) utilize the 30x165 cartridge which allows both cannons to use the same ammunition. The Precision Mechanic Plant in Western Ukraine launched serial-production of Soviet 30x165 ammunition including the 3UBR8 Armor Piercing Discarding Sabot round with Tracer (APDS-T) round, 3UBR6 Armor Piercing round with Tracer (AP-T) round, 3UOR6 High-Explosive Incendiary Fragmentation round with Tracer (F-T) and the 3UOF8 High Explosive Incendiary round (HEF-I).
- Currently, the two main country’s operating the BTR-3E1 is Thailand and Ukraine.
