Breda Ba.82.

History.

In 1937 Breda developed a twin-engine metal bomber for the Regia Aeronautica following the standards for similar foreign vehicles. The aircraft in question was called the Breda Ba.82, which was a high-speed medium bomber very similar to its foreign contemporaries such as the Bristol Blenheim and Tupolev SB-2. The aircraft had a well-conventional structure with a glazed nose and twin-stem empennage. The plane made its first flight in the summer of 1937 and various problems were encountered with the design, aerodynamics of the nose and tuning of the engines, but despite this the Ministry of Aeronautics was willing to commission a small series, provided that if the initial defects had been resolved. In the same year the prototype alone was exhibited at the Milan Air Fair, and the work to try to improve the aircraft continued until 1939 without however giving notable results. This, added to the performance which had become poor for the time and the competition from the Savoia-Marchetti trimotors, led to the abandonment of a continuation of this aircraft, which prototype was soon scrapped.

Armaments and propulsion.

The armament planned for the aircraft was three Breda-SAFAT machine guns in 7.7 mm caliber mounted in turrets, although photographic evidence shows the installation of only one machine gun placed in the nose. As drop armament, the aircraft could carry up to 1,000 kg of bombs.
In terms of engines, the aircraft was powered by two Fiat A.80 RC.41 “Nembo” engines (the same as the B.R.20) delivering 1,000 hp each; this allowed the plane to reach a maximum speed of 425 km/h.
