Bombers in War Thunder are obsolete and there role as a strategic bomber is non existent. Bombers are not a threat to anyone, let alone make a impact on the match. Bombers need to bomb things and the basic bases are not cutting it. The player’s airfields is the perfect solution.
Airfield’s require multiple pillars to operate in real life. These pillars can be shown in game with simple assets. Technician can be tents or small wooden barracks. Fuel is stored in massive silos and nimble but vulnerable trucks. Ammunition is stored in massive sealed bunkers. All of these pillars should be effected but in War Thunders current state they are not. Bombers in reality are known to flatten entire cities, in War Thunder they have the potential to be known (and feared) for flattering your teams airfield.
If a bombers bombs your silos, you have longer refuelling times. If your trucks and silos are destroyed, that’s it, no more fuel. If your personnel are incapacitated (burned/shot) your repair is going to be impacted. If your ammunition is destroyed then you guessed it no ammo. These changes would make the bomber more of a assets and a threat to the airspace. There worth increases incentivising people not only to play bombers but to protect them.
Lets talk about the elephant in the room. Airfield aa. Atm aa is manned by T-1000 terminator. It is unfun and more importantly predictable. What should happen is the aa has degrees of accuracy depending on range. Example. At 3km they are super accurate, they will be firing timed proxy accurately and effectively. At 5km they are still a threat but they need to be inaccurate, enough not to be a threat to a nimble fighter but to a bomber they need to be scared. At 8km they stop becoming a threat. The rounds can be dodged easily by a aware bomber pilot. But they can still cause a problem for someone flying in straight line for long periods of time. With early jets roland missiles should still play a role for the closer targets but a bigger missile for the IL 28/canberra flying at 8km high should be used, something like 9M33M3 on the Osa-MAK (but with reduced range 8km instead of 10.30km). All of these aa’s should be killable. They could be killed by a skilled fighter pilot using the terrain and rockets to destroy aa creating gaps for the bomber to enter.
A side note about the airfield. All of these building I have suggested and aa are unmarked and camouflaged. Before the match starts the player can see pictures of the airfield from when is was scouted out by a recon plane. This picture marks where everything is but you cant see it when you hop in your plane. The ammunition is stored in concrete bunkers that required a large bomb to crack. The fuel trucks stay near the runway but also near the aa. The barracks are also hidden they are surrounded by buildings that look similar to it. All of thee factors make a bombers life harder.
Another side note about aa. Aircraft should be versing there appropriate aa for their time period. 88 flak for ww2, gepard and shilka for early cold war etc. This only for the aa guns for the airfield, not the missile aa.
