Barrier-S Tank Destroyer: Breaking Barriers

Basic Description:
- The Barrier-S is a modified Shturm-S tank destroyer that is being developed and tested by DKKB Luch. The Shturm-S itself is a Soviet designed tank destroyer that fires the 9M114 Missile that was developed in in 1976 and adopted by the Soviet Army in 1979. The Shturm-S is based off of the MTLB Armored Personnel Carrier (APC) that features a low profile, and amphibious capabilities to rapidly move personnel. However, the MTLB APC as well as the Barrier-S is lightly armored, able to be penetrated by 12.7mm caliber fire. The vehicle is powered by a YaMZ-238V V8 Diesel Engine that is capable of producing 240 horsepower that provides full functions for electronic systems as well as propulsion. A major improvement over the original Shturm-S is the new OPSN-I Optical Electronic System which includes a laser rangefinder as well as thermal imaging, television, 20x optics, and laser sensors that can detect targets up to 11km away. The OPSN-I was unveiled in 2019 and is originally designed for aircraft that has been tailored to the Barrier-S Tank Destroyer. Other features are a Laser Warning Receiver to notify the crew of incoming missiles and laser range finding devices, 8x 81mm smoke grenade launchers, and the inclusion of the Barrier Missile Complex which can fire the RK-2P and RK-2POF anti-tank missiles which can reach 6-7km away and target low flying helicopters. The Barrier-S was originally showcased at the International Defense Exhibition in 2021 with plans to field test the vehicle in 2022. It is unknown what the current status of the vehicle program is and if the prototype has seen combat during the conflict in Ukraine.
