Yes but there are certain spots on some of them that it can be useful (I do think that bigger maps are needed especially for higher BR tanks capable of hiring 5+km shots)
They used to be quite strong, many years ago. Then gaijin nerfed them by removing the 16x zoom, and halving their reverse speed from 15kph to 7kph.
They were in a pretty sorry state for a while, but the recent (though it was a while ago now) buffs to their engine power made them a whole lot more usable to the point where I think they are more middle of the road in the current game, rather than some of the worst as they used to be.
They are definitely 2nd line sniper/support tanks. You dont want to play agressive with them. You want to sit back a bit, stay out of cities, and play ridgelines covering open areas.
Use the pnuematic suspension, you’ll want to get used to it as the Type 90s and Type 10s have the same system. Its quite useful, and it gives you some of the best gun depression at the BR.
That said IMO BR for BR, The Type 74C is better. I dont know why you think its unplayable? The STB should be the same but for some reason gaijin refuses to give it its HEAT round back after all the nerfs to it, despite it now being an identical copypaste of the 74C. Though even with the APDS i still think its a bit better. The Type 93 round is the only difference between them (that matters in game at least), but the HEAT and APDS have no problems penning anything at their BR and so you basically otherwise have the same tank but 0.7 lower than the E and F.
the issue is horrible map design means you rarely get to play the type 74 as intended. When it comes to comparable tanks like the leopard a1a1 you have better gun handling and speed, meaning if you are forced into a cqc map you still are able to outflank the enemy, cant really do that in a type 74. half the time im getting crap maps like middle east and sweden exactly how is the suspension supposed to help me. Even in maps where you can snipe the leopard a1a1 does much better, given its good reverse speed. the dm23/dm33 difference is irrelevant at this tier as dm23 is sufficient for penning most tanks frontally
You just have to make it work, you cant play aggressively like a Russian MBT. On pure city maps like that you sort of have to find a decent angle and just hold it, and let the enemy drive into your gun. Slowly move up while keeping your engine quiet if you can, and listen for enemy engines.
Or take a different vehicle on those maps - my 9.0 lineup especially on those types of maps I normally spawn the Type 89/Type 87 RCV first as they perform better on those maps in general, and use the Type 74s as late game spawns where they do a bit better with the teams thinned out allowing more flexible movement around the map.
at the very least type 93 shouldnt be a tier iv mod, i have to grind a bunch of useless crap on a mediocre mbt till i can get apfsds that isnt butt cheeks even though theres nothing else good about it
at the same time tho even then the ztz88 isnt vulnerable to autocannons from the front with the same crappy maneuverability. It seeems odd when a tam is a better3 mbt than you are, though i suppose even as a mbt the tam would be better than the ztz88s
I prefer it at 8.7, but a 4second reload is always useful. It’s just more situational. Though, saying that, the Chinese have a 5 second autoloading 120mm at 9.0 in the PTZ-89, which I prefer (even with no armour).
With the exception of the Object279 and the Object775, I don’t care about armour in general at 9.0-9.3. Give me all the firepower, give me IFVs, give me missile slingers, give me autocannon spammers. There are just too many machines at 9.0-9.3 that are designed to dunk on MBTs with high efficiency.
