Its not IOG alone. I accept that there might be limitations to what can be done by IOG alone, especially as distances increase significantly (though both ASRAAM and IRIS-T have documented HOBS capablity and neither have DL)
The question, and the only question relevant to this thread, is why cant Aim-120A, B and C5 be fired beyond the gimball limit of its seeker like many other Fox-3s can, especially on aircraft that can provide DL the entire time.
SARH are fundementally different and might have different restrictions. But ARH?
Who knows, it seems though that materials have been passed to the devs that “improved HOBS” regarding AIM-120D means removed gimbal limits, and if that’s the case then there’s an uphill battle to prove that the previous AMRAAM variants should have the same benefits because now they’re operating on an understanding that primary sources basically states AIM-120C and before doesn’t have the same feature.
I got a question though…if the aim 120D and all other aim 120s have the same seeker in the game only difference being in gnss…could that not be a valid argument…its the same seeker just with gnss being the difference
Blue Vixen has a 140° FoR iirc, so that places the target outside of the AMRAAMs 110° FoR
Clearly states the exercise was to fire at a target within the FoV of the radar but not within the FoV of the seeker on the Aim-120B and it fired and flew towards the target just fine.
Which, come to think of it, is then a buff for every single aircraft in-game that using AMRAAM not just the Gripen and Typhoon, because even limited to radar FoR, it would still increase the amount of HOBS for them all.
I think this secondary source somewhat settles it, but probably wont be enough to prove it to Gaijin unfortunately
R-77 is similar, launch limits are governed by host radar gimbal limits.
It’s why it has ±60/120 degrees a launch limit on mig-35, while it has a ±85/170 degrees launch limit on mig-29smt/kr (irl) because respectively the latter’s gimbal limits on their radar are larger.
Wouldn’t be surprised if this is a thing with all fox 3s.
By the source above, it would at least be Bs too (which in-game would include As)
And its not just the Gimballed radars that would benefit from it, everything has a radar FoR larger than the seeker FoR.
But yeah, its unfair that everyone else can do it, but not AMRAAM slingers because “reasons”
Now whether I would actually fire those kinds of HOBS shots Im not sure, still bleeds energy, and thats still basically the only notable advantage the AMRAAM still maintain. But should still be an option
While true, something like the gripen E or AESA Typhoons could still guide them in though, as opposed to only being able to fire them and then have no radar guidance for them.
Kinda like when you fire PL-12A’s in trk mem on the J-10C. (or 77-1 on su-30sm)
Oh definetly, still the strongest for the tactic. But even back in the CAPTOR-M days, Id fire straight and then drag the target to the edge of the radar scope, so I was more than half way there in-case I needed to fully notch. Aircraft that are slower getting into the notch could be pre-emptively in that position and fire, and then just finish notching if/when needed.
It would be a tactic Id do quite a bit in the FA2 and F3 Late if I could, for now, id be limited to only the Seekers FoV not the Radars
