All First World War Vehicles

This will list all vehicles that qualify to be added to the game. For clarification, those qualifications include:

  • Bare minimum of a cannon or large-caliber rifle/machine gun for normal vehicles, but anti-aircraft vehicles are exempt from this.
  • Is self-contained, in the sense that they do not require any exterior vehicles to provide locomotion, crew, or ammunition. An exception is made for ammunition trailers that can be towed by said vehicle.
  • Falls within the timeframe of the First World War, or is a postwar license-production or import of a First World War vehicle. This is due to some countries, such as Japan or Sweden, only acquiring male tanks after the war had ended, and others, like the Soviets, reproducing First World War tanks after the war had ended. The Russian Civil War and the German Revolution is also considered to be extensions of the First World World War for the purposes of this list, and vehicles used then will be included. However, this does not apply to First World War trucks or other logistics chassis mounted with postwar guns.

The list is organized by tech tree, with the applicable countries of origin included under the name of the tech tree. It is further organized by vehicle type, which is finally organized chronologically first by vehicle model, and then by the submodel. For a TL;DR, here is a list of the names of the vehicles included in the list:

Summary
The M1917 was intended to be America’s premiere light tank in Europe alongside the Mk. VIII Liberty as their heavy tank, but due to production delays neither would see action. Instead, the tank was only delivered after the war had already ended. It continued service into the 1930s, when it was then largely replaced by more modern tanks like the M1 combat car and the M2 light tank.

Summary
Starting from 1927, numerous designs tried to replace the M1917 in service. Among these was the M1917 itself, which took to enlarging the engine in an attempt to solve its mobility problems. However, it still wasn’t enough and while a limited production run of M1917A1 was constructed, Christie’s designs ultimately won out as the new standard.

Summary
The Mark V* was lengthened in order to cross the larger anti-tank trenches that were being dug out during the later part of 1918. They also formed the bulk of the American heavy tank battalions, both during the war and the in the immediate aftermath. Later, they were replaced by Mark VIII Liberties.

Variants & Changes:

  • 1918: some tanks were produced with older 20.5-in tracks instead of the newer 26.5-in tracks.

Summary
The Mark VIII was a collaborative effort between the United Kingdom, the United States, and the France in an effort to create a new “international” heavy tank for the planned 1919 offensive. However, the end of the war meant that this never occurred. As a result, the French Mark VIII factory ultimately produced no tanks, the British factories ultimately only produced 25 out of an original order of 1,450 due to their production no longer being necessary, and, like the M1917, American production lagged far behind and would only begin nearly a full half a year after the end of the war. Ultimately, an American Mark VIII wouldn’t be completed until 1920 with 100 being produced by the end of the year. The American version differed from the British version in a number of ways, including: the elimination of the sidewall tower machine guns, the usage of the 7.62-mm M1919 in place of the .303-in Hotchkiss Mk. I, the installation of a semaphore mast, a bullet deflector plate on the rear of the tank, and a canvas cover over stored tanks.

They would see service until 1932 as America’s only in-service heavy tank until the later part of the Second World War.

Variants & Changes:

  • November 1918: first mild steel pilot with seven .303-in Hotchkiss machine guns and a faulty exhaust system
  • March 1919: second mild steel pilot with a semaphore and seven .303-in Hotchkiss machine guns
    • May 1919: .303-in Hotchkiss machine guns replaced by 7.62-mm M1917 machine guns
  • 1919~: sidewall machine guns removed in production models
  • 1925: strobe vision dome installed on one tank, reverted the same year
  • 1932: air-cooling system for engine installed on one tank

Summary
In response to the effectiveness of cannon armored cars in 1914, further cannon armored cars were ordered. One model selected were based on Packard trucks and completed by 1915. Due to the chaos of the Russian Revolution and proceeding Civil War, both of the two built armored cars were captured and converted to be 2cm gun carriers. As a part of the “Kokampf,” they were deployed in Berlin during the German Revolution and later turned over to Entente forces due to the restrictions of the Treaty of Versailles.

Variants & Changes:

  • 1918: captured Packard converted to use a 2cm Becker K. M2 in place of the 37-mm Maxim-Nordenfelt, and three M. G. 08 in place of the single 7,62-mm PM-10

Summary
Garford-Putilov formed the largest type of armored cars in the Russian Empire. During the last two years of the First World War, Germany captured five of the thirty cars and converted at least three to use M. G. 08. However, they wouldn’t see much action until the German Revolution, where they were used as a part of the “Kokampf” and later turned over to Entente forces due to the restrictions of the Treaty of Versailles.

Variants & Changes:

  • 1916-1918: at least three captured Garford converted to use M. G. 08 in place of the 7,62-mm obr. 1918 g.

Summary
The DZR 19 was one of the numerous armored cars constructed during the revolutionary period. It first saw service within the Freikorps, up until their abolishment, and then in the Sicherheitspolizei as armored police cars. While not allowed to own them by treaty, they were sometimes loaned to the Reichswehr for usage. They survived up until the 1930s.

Summary
The L. K. II was Germany’s answer to the British Whippet, and also an attempt to solve the issue of their lackluster industrial capability that had been lagging the production of the A7V for over a year by that point. Two vehicles were meant to be made: a “female” machine gun tank and a “male” cannon tank. The first two prototypes were “males,” armed with the 5,7cm cannon found on A7Vs, but due to the intense kickback of the gun it was planned to install a 3,7cm cannon on production tanks. However, all production tanks that were made by the end of the war were “females.” They would never be operationally deployed before the end of the war and would either be scrapped or sold to comply with the Treaty of Versailles.

Summary
The Treffas-Wagen was one of Germany’s first attempts at creating a tank. It was developed and constructed by Hansa-Lloyd at the direction of the OHL, and having no experience in creating even an armored fighting vehicle and much less a tank, the wildly unconventional, even for the time, Treffas-Wagen was the model produced. However, after being tested against the mockup A7V, it was decided to cancel the project entirely due to it being a clearly insufficient model, and it was consequently scrapped by October of 1918.

Summary
Mark IV tanks were first encountered by Germany on the 7th of June, 1917, when they were deployed on an assault on Messines Ridge. However, the battle of Cambrai is when they first managed to capture some examples of the tank. It wouldn’t be until nearing the end of the year that they would be repaired by the Bayer. Armee-Kraftwagen-Park Nr. 20, where they would then first be deployed with German units starting from February of 1918; but, operational use of them wouldn’t start until months afterwards. They formed the bulk of the German tank force due to the insufficient production of A7Vs and were rearmed, at the very least with the cannons replaced by German cannons, but otherwise unchanged.

Two females would even see service as far as the German Revolution of 1919, where they a part of the Freiwillinge Landjägerkorps. They remained the last tanks in German control before the Treaty of Versailles banned them from having tanks.

Summary
A7V was Germany’s first domestic tank and only (production) domestic tank during the First World War. Despite British tanks appearing en masse in 1916, design on a domestic German tank didn’t begin until 1917 when it became apparent that tanks were becoming a staple of the modern battlefield despite Germany’s numerous anti-tank weapons. Thus, the first A7V was only produced near the end of 1917, and it wouldn’t be until nearly midway through 1918 that any combat units would be ready to use them in battle. When deployed, they adopted all of the same problems that the first British tanks had: faulty and overworked components, poor visibility, and, despite the on-paper mobility, poor speed and prone to getting stuck within the muddy terrain of the Western Front. Worse yet, the lack of initiative from the OHL and most of the German industries being diverted to other war material left the production of the A7Vs sorely lacking: a mere 20 tanks, alongside the around 40 Beutepanzers, against the literally thousands of Entente tanks produced throughout the war.

Consequently of the three A7V battalions organized by the start of their March offensives, they would be left with only one operational battalion by the end of the war. The last operation of an A7V-derivative, a converted Überlandwagen, took place during the German Revolution of 1919 in the hands of the Freikorps in order to suppress the communist uprisings. It was also the last tank, alongside two female Beutepanzer, to be in German hands before they were forced to turn it over to the Entente due to the Treaty of Versailles.

Summary
Despite the A7V’s on-paper better mobility than contemporary British tanks, it suffered from a lack of mobility over the beaten terrain of the Western Front due to their top-heaviness and track layout. To rectify that, the layout and suspension of the British Marks were copied in spirit and used to create an A7V-based tank based on the British layout. One prototype of this A7V-U was completed and despite some issues, namely its heavier weight, twenty tanks were ordered before the end of the war albeit none would enter production before the end of it.

Summary
The need for a mobile anti-aircraft gun appeared as early as 1913 due to the mass appearance of military balloons. Their 1913 artillery tractors was used as the basis for the first class of self-propelled anti-balloon guns with both Ehrhardt and Daimler producing their own versions. They would see service throughout the entire First World War, and during the latter part also function as self-propelled anti-tank guns.

Variants & Changes:

  • Ehrhardt-Rheinmetall: distinguished by inclined radiator guard without a central vertical protrusion
  • 1915: gun shield removed
  • Krupp-Daimler: distinguished by flatter radiator guard with a central vertical protrusion
  • 1915: gun shield removed

Summary
The K. D. I were the most advanced artillery tractors in the German military by the end of the First World War and also formed the largest amount of truck-based self-propelled guns. While an image of it doesn’t exist in German service, one K. D. I serving as a carrier for a 3,7cm gun was sold to the Dutch after the end of the war.

Summary
The 7,7cm Flak. L/27 appeared in 1914 as a mobile gun, but was only adopted on the K. D. I chassis in 1918. Alongside the L/35, it served during the last year of the war and was then allowed to remain a part of the Reichswehr likely due to its “defensive” nature. It was rearmed during the 1930s and remained in service to at least the start of the Second World War.

Variants & Changes:

  • 1918: Variations produced with both a L/27 and a L/35 gun.
  • 1930-1932: 7,7cm guns replaced by a 7,5 cm F. K. n. A. L/36
  • 1931: Spoked wheels started to be phased out in favor of rubber wheels.

Summary
Benz-Gaggenau Typ 5 K trucks have been in service prior to the war and throughout the entirety of it. This was in various forms as utility trucks to artillery tractors. One such form, of which only an image survives, is of it serving as a carrier for a 8,8cm Flak. L/45 in a naval MPL C/13 mounting. It was destroyed on the Vesne Front in August of 1918.

Summary
The Lanz Raupenwagen LW is likely the most obscure vehicle of the First World War, which is made odd due to its, relatively, large production count. It was produced as another tracked solution to artillery tractors and had four variations, of which at least one upgraded the vehicle with a stronger engine. However, visually they look identical and no documents exist to specify their actual differences. Based on photographs, at least one was converted into an anti-aircraft gun carrier in the same fashion as an Überlandwagen was. It is not known if this specific vehicle was equipped with the 80 hp (60 kW) or 100 hp (75 kW) engine.

Variants & Changes:

  • Lanz Raupenwagen LW I: no known differences
  • Lanz Raupenwagen LW II: no known differences
  • Lanz Raupenwagen LW III: no known differences
  • Lanz Raupenwagen LW IV: no known differences

Summary
The Flakwagen A7V is a mysterious prototype, namely because nothing survived of it aside from its photographs. What is known is that it’s an Überlandwagen modified with a slightly longer hull to accommodate the anti-aircraft guns and that at least three prototypes were constructed, each in a different configuration. It is rumored that at least one was sent to the Western Front as a part of an anti-aircraft battery, but aside from that it is thought they were simply scrapped at the end of the war.

Variants & Changes:

  • 1918: Second prototype constructed; armored cover for driver and commander replaced by canvas cover
  • 1918: Third prototype constructed; 7,62cm Flak. L/30 replaced by 7,7cm Flak. L/27 and canvas cover bars removed
    • 1918: canvas cover bars installed
      • 1918: canvas cover bars and rear 7,7cm gun removed

We definitely need a comprehensive WW1 expansion, I think it could be a lot of fun, especially with modified maps like the Great War map. It would be quite fun if they had a separate matchmaker or even just BR range (like 0.3 or something). This event brought me back to low tier and reminded me how fun that can be had in the game when it’s not too serious. Also just gives War Thunder more vehicles as we’re getting very close to modern day at top tier now!

Overall just a big opportunity to bring a refreshing and new wind to War Thunder, and especially to create some nice new game modes.

Also playing sim in WW1 would be amazing immersion!

They would have to have a separate BR range. There’s already enough variance in capability between early war and late war tanks that would necessitate it, and tanks like the A7V are outright overpowered against their contemporaries and would have to be matched against 1920s tanks to be in any way balanced; while the 1920s tanks themselves would also be wildly underpowered compared to the 1930s interwar tanks we have in-game. You only need to look as far as the lacking capabilities of the A1E1 Independent as an example of that.

Then you also have the issue of the French and the Americans using the underpowered 37 mm for the entire 1920s and into the 1930s, which would have anywhere from 8 mm of penetration (37-mm M1916, only had an HE-BF shell) to 16 mm of penetration (highest penetrating projectile of the 37 S.A. mle 1918 prior to the mle 1935 APCR) for their time-accurate projectiles. Those would require time-traveling APCR to be in any way usable in-game, and it’s also likely the reason why the Saint-Chamond was used instead of the Renault FT in the event – in fact, I would be as bold to say that it was the very reason, because the Renault FT would SUCK; it would be the WORST First World War tank in-game, because the advantage of a 360° turret doesn’t matter when the 8-man heavy tank has mouse-aim and a “stable” ride that completely counteracts the two disadvantages it had in real life.

Nice comprehensive list, one addition, the Beute Garford is missing german made ammo, specifically the SAPHe Stahlgranate (alternative fuze as simple HE not needed, as it would be a downgrade to the current HE)
https://community.gaijin.net/issues/p/warthunder/i/UGMN2P5fqEAK

S. Is not AP but plain Ball with lead or soft steel core.
S.m.K. is not apcr, but plain AP.

Do you happen to know the performance and weight of them so I can plug them into the penetration calculator? I wasn’t able to find it, except for the AP.

I dont sry.

Yup I agree that the ideal solution would be a separate range/matchmaker for WW1 vehicles. Things like the FT could work well when facing ww1 armoured cars and such, but yes would have issues against the big tanks with 57-75mm cannons. Then the “top-tier” of WW1 vehicles like the A7V would face vehicles like the Medium Mk1 and the Char 2C.

Eh, the Renault FT would just be poor in general, even against armored cars back then. Could you imagine it facing something as simple as a Garford? Anything crew-heavy would be horrible for it to face.

I do take back what I said about it being the worst, though. That would go to the American M1917 and any of their 1920s-1930s tanks equipped with the 37-mm M1916. The only armor-piercing ammunition that it has is the 37-mm Mk. II HE with a base fuze, which would penetrate 8 mm in-game going by the penetration calculator and multiplying that outcome by 0.75 (I think that’s the formula for base-fuzed HE in-game?); and Irl it also couldn’t penetrate 8 mm beyond 300 yards. Luckily, the 37-mm M1916 does share the cartridge with the 37 T.R.P. mle 1916, which is an infantry version of the gun mounted on the Renault FT (or the other way around), so any of the French ammunition could be used by it in-game, albeit ahistorically.

I imagine the hierarchy of the First World War top tier would be sorted something like this: Mark VIII → Saint-Chamond → A7V/A7V-U/FCM 1A → K-Wagen. The British would come out with a vengeance in the interwar period, though. The Medium Mk. I and Mk. II were some of the best of the time, while the Soviets and Americans largely wouldn’t produce anything of note and the French would be stuck spamming out Renault FT duplicates that wouldn’t even be capable of penetrating themselves; of course all with some exceptions (American M1921/22 Mediums, Soviet T-18 spam, French SRA/SRB/FCM/FAMH battle tank prototypes). Though, I can’t see the Char 2C facing the A7V, at least not unless they’re in a max uptier. It would be better than the A7V in every way that matters: better gun that’s turreted, better mobility, and better armor, while still retaining the same split crew profile that makes the A7V so survivable.

Summary
Lanchesters were purchased in 1916. At first they were intended to be machine gun cars, but due to the demand for cannon cars, all but one was rearmed with 37-mm Hotchkiss. They would see service through to the Russian Civil War where captured vehicles would also be used by the Red Army.

Variants & Changes:

  • 1916: All but one car rearmed with 37-mm Hotchkiss.
  • 1916: One car equipped with barbed wire cutter.

Summary
Ulyatovsky designed and constructed this armored car in 1916. It was likely based on the machine gun armored car built at Izhora a year prior and was initially armed with the same machine gun. This was then replaced with a short 57-mm gun. There is no information on its combat history during the First World War or after.

Variants & Changes:

  • 1916: Rearmed with a 57-mm gun as a cannon car.

Summary
The Russo-Balts were another creation of Staff Captain Nekrasov, this time at a larger scale compared to his sole Renault. Six were constructed, three atop the Russo-Balt D and three atop the Russo-Balt S 24/40. All three S 24/40 would later be converted into railway cars. Information on their combat history ended at the Russian Revolution, with them only reappearing in 1921 when they were being scrapped.

Variants & Changes:

Summary
The Mannesmann-Mulag was one of the first cannon cars built for the First World War and can be traced as the car responsible for the mass-adoption of them within the Russian Army. After the destruction of the first car in 1915, two more were constructed in its place, but built on a lighter chassis with a smaller gun that had a better high-explosive projectile available to it. At least one would survive the entire war and took part for the parade of the anniversay of the October Revolution in 1918. It was later dismantled in 1921.

Variants & Changes:

  • Mannesmann-Mulag 4 t: The first armored car was built with a 37 kW engine and a 47-mm gun.
  • Mannesmann-Mulag 3 t: The second armored cars were built with a 31 kW engine and a 37-mm gun, rear machine gun removed.

Summary
The Mgebrov-White were a part of a series of armored cars designed by Staff Captain Mgebrov. However, production was limited due to the unfortunate death of Mgebrov soon after the completion of his armored cars. Along with the Mgebrov-Benz and the Mgebrov-Pierce-Arrow, the car was deployed against the Turks for the duration of the war. It later fell into the hands of the Red Army where it was last noted fighting at the Kahkovka Bridgehead in 1920, before records of it ceased.

Summary
The Mercedes were built in 1915 with a unique design principle: that their weaponry was hidden by foldable sides. The chassis themselves were also rare for Russia, and they were among the only armored cars built on that chassis. They saw service until 1916 when that rareness came back to bite them, as the spare parts necessary for their repair wasn’t available. They were intended to be converted into armored railway cars, but this never came to fruition before the upheaval of the Russian Revolution and the following Civil War, at which point all records on the cars are lost and presumably they were scrapped at least by the end of the civil war.

Variants & Changes:

  • 1916: Armored cars partially converted into armored railway cars, never completed.

Summary
In response to the effectiveness of cannon armored cars in 1914, further cannon armored cars were ordered. One model selected were based on Packard trucks and completed by 1915. They served through the eastern front for the entirety of the war, but were recalled in 1917 to deal with the unrest in Petrograd. Afterwards, they were transferred to Dvinsk to rebut a German offensive, but the chaos of the October Revolution left them without orders. In 1918 the cars, still in Dvinsk, unsuccessfully fought German troops and both were ultimately captured, later seeing use in Berlin in suppressing the German’s own revolution.

Summary
The Pierce-Arrow were intended to protect coastal fortifications for the navy, but due to the production of the Naval Garford-Putilov that plan was cancelled. Instead, the two completed cars were used as training vehicles within the Naval Reserve Armored Division. Later, during the collapse of the Russian Imperial Army in wake of the October Revolution, both cars were captured – one, captured by Latvia and being used into the mid-1920s, and the other, captured by Germany and being used during the German Revolution by the Freikorps before being turned over the Entente.

Summary
Garford-Putilov formed the largest type of armored cars in the Russian Empire. They were spread out in support of machine gun armored cars and saw service up until the Russian Civil War, where most of them were captured by the Red Army. At least 27 survived up to 1931, at which point all remaining Garfords were dismantled by the Soviets.

Variants & Changes:

  • 1916: An aft driver’s station is installed, allowing for two drivers in case of the incapacitation of the other, some armored cars also had armor installed around the machine guns.
  • 1923: Up to twenty-one Garfords converted into armored railway cars by the replacement of their wheels.
  • Naval Garford-Putilov: See below.

Summary
The success of the army Garford-Putilov prompted the navy to order cars of their own. Their model was more heavily armed and armored, and was based on a heavier chassis with a more powerful engine to compensate for that. They would initially see service guarding Peter the Great’s coastal fortress, but would later become frontline vehicles once the eastern front started to collapse. During the Russian Civil War, most were captured by the Red Army and some survived up to 1931 where they were ultimately dismantled due to the obsolescence.

Summary
While armored cars were successful within the Russian army, they did have one fault: their, relatively, poor cross-country mobility. One solution pursued was the creation of armored halftracks, of which these two cars were one of the first. They were intended to see service on the front, but the February Revolution left them relegated to Petrograd, and after the October Revolution both cars were captured in the immediate aftermath. They would see service until 1922 when they were both then scrapped.

Summary
The October Revolution left the Red Armies with the bulk of the armored vehicles from the short-lived Russian Republic. To rectify that, some of the White Armies built their own. The Don Army decided to do that in 1918 with their halftrack tractor design. It was intended to see frontline service, but due to it being overweight it was relegated to being a training vehicle until 1919 where it was then dismantled due to the retreat of the VSYUR.

Summary
The Renault FT was the first turreted and mass-produced tanks. Four tanks were captured by the Soviets from Odessa in 1919. At least one of these tanks were equipped with a Girod-Renault and another a Renault turret. They saw battle during the same year and were copied as the Renault-Russian, but were largely unsuccessful due to lack of experience with tanks.

Variants & Changes:

  • 1918: Girod-Renault replaced by the Berliet-Girod cylindrical omnibus turret.
  • 1918: Berliet-Girod replaced by Renault polygonal omnibus turret.

Summary
The Renault-Russian was an attempt to copy the Renault FT and can be considered Russia’s first domestic mass-production tank. While not an exact copy, it was similar enough and performed similarly to the captured Renault FT also in service, albeit no Russian-Renault would see combat. However, they quickly started to see frequent breakdowns that demanded salvaging parts from captured Renault FTs, so by the 1930s they were all effectively decommissioned. Though, it wouldn’t be until the later 1930s that they were scrapped.

Variants & Changes:

  • 1920: After the first two tanks, it became standard for a machine gun to also be installed in the turret alongside the cannon.
  • 1921: Three tanks were produced with no armaments at all, presumably as training vehicles.

Summary
The Tsar tank was the only one of two of Russian Empire’s tank designs to actually materialize in reality in some form during the First World War. However, due to its thin armor, the immense vulnerability of the front wheels, and the poor mobility provided by the high ground pressure for what would have been the heaviest tank design of the war, aside from the later K-Wagen; the prototype was rejected and later scrapped. It consequently never received its planned armaments.

Summary
Mark V composites were deployed to Russia under both Denikin’s VSYUR and Vrangel’s Russian Army/Squadron. Both of them would suffer losses at the hands of the Red Army with at least 14 of their Mk. V tanks being either captured or repaired and put into Red Army service by the end of the Civil War. They would see service until 1938 as training tanks before being decommissioned and setup as monuments across the Soviet Union.

Summary
The Austin was the first self-propelled anti-aircraft gun in Russia. After passing successful tests, it was intended to mass produce the design. However, the destruction of the modified 57-mm Hotchkiss ruined that plan. Instead, later Peerless and Russo-Balt designs were used.

1917: Gunshield and machine installed for self-defense.

+/-45° to left and right for the 57mm gun.
Also there was a Prototype of the LK II mit Kanone, with the 57, production would have gotten the 3,7 cm gun, the Mg turret armed were the standart LK II variant, which are 2 different tanks, as the LK II mit Kanone has some parts taken over from the LK I, like the air intakes, due to muzzle blast.

Deutsches*

From what I could find, the design of the 3,7cm gun tank was never finalized. Namely, in that a decision of it either being installed in the same casemate or being installed in a turret was never reached.

I didnt say that, what i meant is, the Turreted LK II with MG is a different vehicle to the cannon armed ones. So mixing its Prototype and that Production isnt exactly propper.

I have the American Mk. VIII formatted the same way. The production one is really only there to show its continuation more than anything else, since there is no way that is being added in-game.

By the way, do you happen to have any information on the unarmored Benz and “Oldies” gun trucks that accompanied the first Mannesmann-Mulag? I haven’t been able to find any information on them, aside that they were a part of the 1st automobile machine-gun company.

I have never heard of them sry, maybe @Spr4yz knows something about them.

Yeah you’re right, I love the little FT but it would simply be too weak and frustrating to use against bigger heavily crewed vehicles.

Use the Warthunder Tech Tree creator website to make your own tech tree to publish it more visually if that helps, not sure you have had heard of it before.

That is my plan after I finish the lists, though I prefer making it in paint-dot-net so I can use the “tree” style rather than “line” style of vehicle progression, more similar to what WoT does than WT, or how WT organizes the larger helicopter trees where they actually branch out from a singular line.

Expanded Israeli tree as example of “tree” format
