All First World War Vehicles

This will list all vehicles that qualify to be added to the game. For clarification, those qualifications include:

  • Bare minimum of a cannon or large-caliber rifle/machine gun for normal vehicles, but anti-aircraft vehicles are exempt from this.
  • Is self-contained, in the sense that they do not require any exterior vehicles to provide locomotion, crew, or ammunition. An exception is made for ammunition trailers that can be towed by said vehicle.
  • Falls within the timeframe of the First World War, or is a postwar license-production or import of a First World War vehicle. This is due to some countries, such as Japan or Sweden, only acquiring male tanks after the war had ended, and others, like the Soviets, reproducing First World War tanks after the war had ended. The Russian Civil War and the German Revolution is also considered to be extensions of the First World World War for the purposes of this list, and vehicles used then will be included. However, this does not apply to First World War trucks or other logistics chassis mounted with postwar guns.

The list is organized by tech tree, with the applicable countries of origin included under the name of the tech tree. It is further organized by vehicle type, which is finally organized chronologically first by vehicle model, and then by the submodel. For a TL;DR, here is a list of the names of the vehicles included in the list: Summary has not been updated yet as of 13/05/2025.

We definitely need a comprehensive WW1 expansion, I think it could be a lot of fun, especially with modified maps like the Great War map. It would be quite fun if they had a separate matchmaker or even just BR range (like 0.3 or something). This event brought me back to low tier and reminded me how fun that can be had in the game when it’s not too serious. Also just gives War Thunder more vehicles as we’re getting very close to modern day at top tier now!

Overall just a big opportunity to bring a refreshing and new wind to War Thunder, and especially to create some nice new game modes.

Also playing sim in WW1 would be amazing immersion!

They would have to have a separate BR range. There’s already enough variance in capability between early war and late war tanks that would necessitate it, and tanks like the A7V are outright overpowered against their contemporaries and would have to be matched against 1920s tanks to be in any way balanced; while the 1920s tanks themselves would also be wildly underpowered compared to the 1930s interwar tanks we have in-game. You only need to look as far as the lacking capabilities of the A1E1 Independent as an example of that.

Then you also have the issue of the French and the Americans using the underpowered 37 mm for the entire 1920s and into the 1930s, which would have anywhere from 8 mm of penetration (37-mm M1916, only had an HE-BF shell) to 16 mm of penetration (highest penetrating projectile of the 37 S.A. mle 1918 prior to the mle 1935 APCR) for their time-accurate projectiles. Those would require time-traveling APCR to be in any way usable in-game, and it’s also likely the reason why the Saint-Chamond was used instead of the Renault FT in the event – in fact, I would be as bold to say that it was the very reason, because the Renault FT would SUCK; it would be the WORST First World War tank in-game, because the advantage of a 360° turret doesn’t matter when the 8-man heavy tank has mouse-aim and a “stable” ride that completely counteracts the two disadvantages it had in real life.

Nice comprehensive list, one addition, the Beute Garford is missing german made ammo, specifically the SAPHe Stahlgranate (alternative fuze as simple HE not needed, as it would be a downgrade to the current HE)
https://community.gaijin.net/issues/p/warthunder/i/UGMN2P5fqEAK

S. Is not AP but plain Ball with lead or soft steel core.
S.m.K. is not apcr, but plain AP.

Do you happen to know the performance and weight of them so I can plug them into the penetration calculator? I wasn’t able to find it, except for the AP.

I dont sry.

Yup I agree that the ideal solution would be a separate range/matchmaker for WW1 vehicles. Things like the FT could work well when facing ww1 armoured cars and such, but yes would have issues against the big tanks with 57-75mm cannons. Then the “top-tier” of WW1 vehicles like the A7V would face vehicles like the Medium Mk1 and the Char 2C.

Eh, the Renault FT would just be poor in general, even against armored cars back then. Could you imagine it facing something as simple as a Garford? Anything crew-heavy would be horrible for it to face.

I do take back what I said about it being the worst, though. That would go to the American M1917 and any of their 1920s-1930s tanks equipped with the 37-mm M1916. The only armor-piercing ammunition that it has is the 37-mm Mk. II HE with a base fuze, which would penetrate 8 mm in-game going by the penetration calculator and multiplying that outcome by 0.75 (I think that’s the formula for base-fuzed HE in-game?); and Irl it also couldn’t penetrate 8 mm beyond 300 yards. Luckily, the 37-mm M1916 does share the cartridge with the 37 T.R.P. mle 1916, which is an infantry version of the gun mounted on the Renault FT (or the other way around), so any of the French ammunition could be used by it in-game, albeit ahistorically.

I imagine the hierarchy of the First World War top tier would be sorted something like this: Mark VIII → Saint-Chamond → A7V/A7V-U/FCM 1A → K-Wagen. The British would come out with a vengeance in the interwar period, though. The Medium Mk. I and Mk. II were some of the best of the time, while the Soviets and Americans largely wouldn’t produce anything of note and the French would be stuck spamming out Renault FT duplicates that wouldn’t even be capable of penetrating themselves; of course all with some exceptions (American M1921/22 Mediums, Soviet T-18 spam, French SRA/SRB/FCM/FAMH battle tank prototypes). Though, I can’t see the Char 2C facing the A7V, at least not unless they’re in a max uptier. It would be better than the A7V in every way that matters: better gun that’s turreted, better mobility, and better armor, while still retaining the same split crew profile that makes the A7V so survivable.

Summary
Lanchesters were purchased in 1916. At first they were intended to be machine gun cars, but due to the demand for cannon cars, all but one was rearmed with 37-mm Hotchkiss. They would see service through to the Russian Civil War where captured vehicles would also be used by the Red Army.

Variants & Changes:

  • 1916: All but one car rearmed with 37-mm Hotchkiss.
  • 1916: One car equipped with barbed wire cutter.

Summary
Ulyatovsky designed and constructed this armored car in 1916. It was likely based on the machine gun armored car built at Izhora a year prior and was initially armed with the same machine gun. This was then replaced with a short 57-mm gun. There is no information on its combat history during the First World War or after.

Variants & Changes:

  • 1916: Rearmed with a 57-mm gun as a cannon car.

Summary
The Mannesmann-Mulag was one of the first cannon cars built for the First World War and can be traced as the car responsible for the mass-adoption of them within the Russian Army. After the destruction of the first car in 1915, two more were constructed in its place, but built on a lighter chassis with a smaller gun that had a better high-explosive projectile available to it. At least one would survive the entire war and took part for the parade of the anniversay of the October Revolution in 1918. It was later dismantled in 1921.

Variants & Changes:

  • Mannesmann-Mulag 4 t: The first armored car was built with a 37 kW engine and a 47-mm gun.
  • Mannesmann-Mulag 3 t: The second armored cars were built with a 31 kW engine and a 37-mm gun, rear machine gun removed.

Summary
The Mgebrov-White were a part of a series of armored cars designed by Staff Captain Mgebrov. However, production was limited due to the unfortunate death of Mgebrov soon after the completion of his armored cars. Along with the Mgebrov-Benz and the Mgebrov-Pierce-Arrow, the car was deployed against the Turks for the duration of the war. It later fell into the hands of the Red Army where it was last noted fighting at the Kahkovka Bridgehead in 1920, before records of it ceased.

Summary
The Mercedes were built in 1915 with a unique design principle: that their weaponry was hidden by foldable sides. The chassis themselves were also rare for Russia, and they were among the only armored cars built on that chassis. They saw service until 1916 when that rareness came back to bite them, as the spare parts necessary for their repair wasn’t available. They were intended to be converted into armored railway cars, but this never came to fruition before the upheaval of the Russian Revolution and the following Civil War, at which point all records on the cars are lost and presumably they were scrapped at least by the end of the civil war.

Variants & Changes:

  • 1916: Armored cars partially converted into armored railway cars, never completed.

Summary
In response to the effectiveness of cannon armored cars in 1914, further cannon armored cars were ordered. One model selected were based on Packard trucks and completed by 1915. They served through the eastern front for the entirety of the war, but were recalled in 1917 to deal with the unrest in Petrograd. Afterwards, they were transferred to Dvinsk to rebut a German offensive, but the chaos of the October Revolution left them without orders. In 1918 the cars, still in Dvinsk, unsuccessfully fought German troops and both were ultimately captured, later seeing use in Berlin in suppressing the German’s own revolution.

Summary
The Pierce-Arrow were intended to protect coastal fortifications for the navy, but due to the production of the Naval Garford-Putilov that plan was cancelled. Instead, the two completed cars were used as training vehicles within the Naval Reserve Armored Division. Later, during the collapse of the Russian Imperial Army in wake of the October Revolution, both cars were captured – one, captured by Latvia and being used into the mid-1920s, and the other, captured by Germany and being used during the German Revolution by the Freikorps before being turned over the Entente.

Summary
The FVD chassis were latewar armored cars that never fulfilled their production goals. The cannon FVD was intended to be produced in twenty units, but by the time of the Russian Revolution only one had been made and further work on the other units were stopped due to the chaos that was brought with the revolution. There is no record on what happened to this sole FVD.

Summary
Garford-Putilov formed the largest type of armored cars in the Russian Empire. They were spread out in support of machine gun armored cars and saw service up until the Russian Civil War, where most of them were captured by the Red Army. At least 27 survived up to 1931, at which point all remaining Garfords were dismantled by the Soviets.

Variants & Changes:

  • 1916: An aft driver’s station is installed, allowing for two drivers in case of the incapacitation of the other, some armored cars also had armor installed around the machine guns.
  • 1923: Up to twenty-one Garfords converted into armored railway cars by the replacement of their wheels.
  • Naval Garford-Putilov: See below.

Summary
The success of the army Garford-Putilov prompted the navy to order cars of their own. Their model was more heavily armed and armored, and was based on a heavier chassis with a more powerful engine to compensate for that. They would initially see service guarding Peter the Great’s coastal fortress, but would later become frontline vehicles once the eastern front started to collapse. During the Russian Civil War, most were captured by the Red Army and some survived up to 1931 where they were ultimately dismantled due to the obsolescence.

Summary
While armored cars were successful within the Russian army, they did have one fault: their, relatively, poor cross-country mobility. One solution pursued was the creation of armored halftracks, of which these two cars were one of the first. They were intended to see service on the front, but the February Revolution left them relegated to Petrograd, and after the October Revolution both cars were captured in the immediate aftermath. They would see service until 1922 when they were both then scrapped.

Summary
The October Revolution left the Red Armies with the bulk of the armored vehicles from the short-lived Russian Republic. To rectify that, some of the White Armies built their own. The Don Army decided to do that in 1918 with their halftrack tractor design. It was intended to see frontline service, but due to it being overweight it was relegated to being a training vehicle until 1919 where it was then dismantled due to the retreat of the VSYUR.

Summary
The Renault FT was the first turreted and mass-produced tanks. Four tanks were captured by the Soviets from Odessa in 1919. At least one of these tanks were equipped with a Girod-Renault and another a Renault turret. They saw battle during the same year and were copied as the Renault-Russian, but were largely unsuccessful due to lack of experience with tanks.

Variants & Changes:

  • 1918: Girod-Renault turrets were replaced by Berliet-Girod cylindrical omnibus turrets in Berliet, SOMUA, and Delaunay-Belleville productions. This removed the cheekbones for a smooth face and uparmored to 22 mm thick. This was the most common type used and was produced alongside the Renault turret.
  • 1918: Girod-Renault turrets were replaced by Renault riveted omnibus turrets in Renault productions. This can be easily differentiated by the riveting and flat armor plates. This was installed approximately 1,147 tanks and was produced alongside the Berliet-Girod turret.

Summary
The Renault-Russian was an attempt to copy the Renault FT and can be considered Russia’s first domestic mass-production tank. While not an exact copy, it was similar enough and performed similarly to the captured Renault FT also in service, albeit no Russian-Renault would see combat. However, they quickly started to see frequent breakdowns that demanded salvaging parts from captured Renault FTs, so by the 1930s they were all effectively decommissioned. Though, it wouldn’t be until the later 1930s that they were scrapped.

Variants & Changes:

  • 1920: After the first two tanks, it became standard for a machine gun to also be installed in the turret alongside the cannon.
  • 1921: Three tanks were produced with no armaments at all, presumably as training vehicles.

Summary
The Tsar tank was the only one of two of Russian Empire’s tank designs to actually materialize in reality in some form during the First World War. However, due to its thin armor, the immense vulnerability of the front wheels, and the poor mobility provided by the high ground pressure for what would have been the heaviest tank design of the war, aside from the later K-Wagen; the prototype was rejected and later scrapped. It consequently never received its planned armaments.

Summary
Mark V composites were deployed to Russia under both Denikin’s VSYUR and Vrangel’s Russian Army/Squadron. Both of them would suffer losses at the hands of the Red Army with at least 14 of their Mk. V tanks being either captured or repaired and put into Red Army service by the end of the Civil War. They would see service until 1938 as training tanks before being decommissioned and setup as monuments across the Soviet Union.

Summary
The Austin was the first self-propelled anti-aircraft gun in Russia. After passing successful tests, it was intended to mass produce the design. However, the destruction of the modified 57-mm Hotchkiss ruined that plan. Instead, later Peerless and Russo-Balt designs were used.

Summary
The Russo-Balt T were the first production anti-aircraft vehicles of the Russian Empire. They would see service against the Germans during the First World War, before being retired from the front in wake of the February Revolution. Their combat history ends there, with them only reappearing in 1922 when they were being scrapped.

1917: Gunshield and machine installed for self-defense.

+/-45° to left and right for the 57mm gun.
Also there was a Prototype of the LK II mit Kanone, with the 57, production would have gotten the 3,7 cm gun, the Mg turret armed were the standart LK II variant, which are 2 different tanks, as the LK II mit Kanone has some parts taken over from the LK I, like the air intakes, due to muzzle blast.

From what I could find, the design of the 3,7cm gun tank was never finalized. Namely, in that a decision of it either being installed in the same casemate or being installed in a turret was never reached.

I didnt say that, what i meant is, the Turreted LK II with MG is a different vehicle to the cannon armed ones. So mixing its Prototype and that Production isnt exactly propper.

I have the American Mk. VIII formatted the same way. The production one is really only there to show its continuation more than anything else, since there is no way that is being added in-game.

By the way, do you happen to have any information on the unarmored Benz and “Oldies” gun trucks that accompanied the first Mannesmann-Mulag? I haven’t been able to find any information on them, aside that they were a part of the 1st automobile machine-gun company.

I have never heard of them sry, maybe @Spr4yz knows something about them.

Yeah you’re right, I love the little FT but it would simply be too weak and frustrating to use against bigger heavily crewed vehicles.

Use the Warthunder Tech Tree creator website to make your own tech tree to publish it more visually if that helps, not sure you have had heard of it before.

That is my plan after I finish the lists, though I prefer making it in paint-dot-net so I can use the “tree” style rather than “line” style of vehicle progression, more similar to what WoT does than WT, or how WT organizes the larger helicopter trees where they actually branch out from a singular line.

Expanded Israeli tree as example of “tree” format
