What we currently have as a aircraft carrier in simulator battles are awful. Even if you hit the proper landing speed and catch the arrestor cable you still end up falling off the aircraft as if the arrestor cable was made of twine sting. As well as the catapult is an actual joke, you don’t have to be lined up, it doesn’t lock you in, its like you hit a booster patch on the carrier. Not to mention the Carriers seem way to small. I couldn’t see you being able to fit more than 4 aircraft on the top of that thing. I mean what was the point in putting it in, if the developers were going to make them that awful. Has me scratching my head.
Overspeed.
I agree, but you can line up your aircraft as intended and only then accelerate along the catapult slot.
Ark Royal isn’t very large, but still two F-14s can take off simultaneously and one more after them. Forrestal is bigger.
What we need is optical landing system (can be repeated arcadely in a window), because we have to land blind with flare (that is wrong) or “nose down” (that is dangerous).
Spoiler
I find there are 3 major issues with the carriers
-
desync. Even with a perfect landing the wires won’t always catch
-
the carriers have a highly eractic almost evasive movement path that kills me more than anything
-
lack of guidance, not sure how it could be done…but just something to help guide you in would be handy…especially in sim.
There are other issues. Like the lack of ramped carriers or aircraft getting landing gear sheared off on takeoff by the catapult but I think those are related to the first few issues
Number 2 gets me more than anything else - whenever I’m in the groove it takes a 90 degree turn.
I can still almost always land on the thing, however, even with non-navy aircraft (hint: gear up and slow)
Also I’ve found that if the carrier has been firing it’s guns, they might be over the take-off area, you have to re-align yourself (unrealistically) so that you miss hitting the guns with your landing gear.
One glitch I did run into which is game-breaking. I attempted to land, passed through an airplane which was on the deck (I think I went through the plane like you do on an airfield, but I’m not sure as I was trying to miss him anyway) - and when I landed long and went into the sea it gave that dude a teamkill.
Yeah, that turn gets me more than anything. I will admit I’m not the most experienced and can only really reliably land in the Buc (and of course the harriers) but I’d account quite a few of my deaths to it shifting unexpectedly and severely.
