If we raise skill of both players, P-51D won’t be able to energy trap and will actually lose in headons because ballistics means nothing. Mustang would win headon only vs bot-Zero that dont know a lot of different types of headons tricks, because you need good controls, good rollrate/turnrate in them and also main argument in such headon is actually damage. For that reason 109G-2 with 3x20mm was always superior in headons to planes with brownings too, having much worse ballistics. And 12.7 have higher chance of dealing Zero damage to Zero, type 99mod2 have much better time to kill, or single shel-hit kill potential than 12.7
Mustang have awful rudder at high speeds just like almost all US props, so again this doesnt help a lot in winning headons.

XF5U can achieve more than 2 TWR at lowest speed, however it’s maximum climbrate is just around 18 m/s and its lower than Zero’s climbrate

Shallow climb for a faster plane at 5-10 degrees climb won’t give you 30 m/s climbrate that will allow you to make energy trap against Zero.
Zero will just climb right behind you at optimal 260-280 km/h speed with higher m/s climbrate than your shallow climb.
