The BNS Louise-Marie (F931) is a Belgian Karel Doorman-class (M-class) multipurpose frigate, originally built for the Royal Netherlands Navy as HNLMS Willem van der Zaan (F829). Purchased by Belgium in 2005, she became the second modern Belgian frigate capable of operating a naval helicopter, long-range anti-ship missiles, modern surface-to-air missiles, and advanced NATO-standard sensors.

The Louise-Marie represents a significant improvement over the previous Belgian Wielingen-class frigates, introducing improved radar systems, vertical-launch air defence missiles, modern command systems, and greatly increased endurance. Together with her sister ship Leopold I, she forms the backbone of Belgium’s modern naval escort capability.

TL;DR : A modern Belgian NATO frigate with Harpoon missiles, Sea Sparrow SAMs, Goalkeeper CIWS, torpedoes and helicopter capability.

History

Spoiler

From HNLMS Willem van der Zaan to BNS Louise-Marie

The BNS Louise-Marie (F931) began her career as HNLMS Willem van der Zaan (F829), the second ship of the Dutch Karel Doorman-class (M-class) multipurpose frigates. Built during the final years of the Cold War, the vessel was designed as a flexible NATO frigate capable of performing anti-submarine warfare, anti-air warfare, and anti-surface warfare missions.

Constructed by Koninklijke Maatschappij De Schelde (KMS) in Vlissingen, the frigate was launched in 1989 and entered service with the Royal Netherlands Navy in 1991. As one of eight M-class frigates built for the Dutch and export markets, she represented a new generation of automated, multipurpose warships designed around NATO interoperability and flexible mission capability.

Transfer to the Belgian Navy

Following post-Cold War reductions within the Royal Netherlands Navy, the Netherlands began selling several of its M-class frigates. Belgium, meanwhile, was searching for a replacement for its ageing Wielingen-class frigates, which had served as the backbone of Belgian naval escort capability since the 1970s.

On 22 December 2005, Belgian Defence Minister André Flahaut and Dutch State Secretary for Defence Cees van der Knaap signed the agreement for the acquisition of two Dutch M-class frigates: F827 Karel Doorman and F829 Willem van der Zaan. The agreement included spare parts, ammunition, technical documentation, maintenance support, and modifications required for future NH90 helicopter operations.

The former Willem van der Zaan was renamed BNS Louise-Marie (F931), after Louise-Marie of Orléans, the first Queen of the Belgians. She entered Belgian service on 8 April 2008 and was officially christened in Antwerp by Her Majesty Queen Paola. The city of Sint-Niklaas became the ship’s sponsor city.

The acquisition of Louise-Marie significantly expanded Belgium’s naval capabilities. Compared with the Wielingen-class, the M-class offered improved endurance, sensors, command systems, aviation facilities, and NATO-standard weapons systems.

Belgian Service

Upon entering Belgian service, Louise-Marie became one of the largest and most capable combat vessels operated by the Belgian Navy. She retained the original M-class multipurpose concept, combining anti-submarine warfare capability with anti-air and anti-surface systems.

Her missions include NATO deployments, maritime security operations, peacekeeping missions, crisis response, and international naval cooperation. The frigate has participated in operations such as maritime security missions in the Mediterranean and counter-piracy operations near the Horn of Africa.

Modernisation and Belgian Upgrades

Between 2011 and 2013, Louise-Marie underwent the same mid-life modernisation programme as the other Belgian and Dutch M-class frigates. This programme aimed to extend the ship’s operational life and maintain NATO interoperability into the 2020s.

The modernisation introduced a new integrated sensor mast and upgraded combat systems, improving detection, tracking, and information-sharing capabilities.

Key upgrades included:

  • Installation of the Thales SMART-S Mk2 3D air and surface search radar.
  • Installation of the Thales Seastar surface surveillance radar.
  • Integration of the Gatekeeper electro-optical/infrared surveillance system.
  • Improvements to combat management and information-processing systems.
  • Extension and reinforcement of the flight deck for NH90 NFH helicopter operations.

The modernised Louise-Marie retained her original weapons suite, including the RIM-7 Sea Sparrow vertical launch system, RGM-84 Harpoon anti-ship missiles, Oto Melara 76 mm gun, Goalkeeper CIWS, and Mk 46 torpedoes. This gave her a balanced capability against aircraft, ships, submarines, and asymmetric threats.

The BNS F931 Louise-Marie remains one of the most advanced ships ever operated by Belgium. Combining Dutch naval engineering with Belgian upgrades and NATO-standard systems, the frigate represents the peak of Belgian Cold War-era naval capability and a natural candidate for a future BeNeLux naval implementation in War Thunder.

The Belgian Navy’s F931 Marie-Louise is a second example of the successful modernization and continued operational service of this class into the 2020s.

Place in War Thunder

The BNS F931 Louise-Marie could bring the Netherlands’ naval innovation into War Thunder’s blue-water ranks:

  • Initial version (1990s): Rank VI, balanced Belgian frigate with Sea Sparrow, Harpoon, and Alouette helicopter.
  • Modernised version (2000s): Rank VII, stronger ESSM SAM possibility, SMART-S radar, and improved automation.

They could appear under a BeNeLux subtree, or as NATO-aligned premiums in Benelux or French trees, highlighting Dutch-Belgian technology and export influence.
