Hello everyone, welcome to this suggestion for the WZ551-SW1. It is an export-oriented wheeled IFV produced by Norinco. Although there is clear public data available for both the chassis and the turret, only a few photographs confirm that this specific combination was ever assembled as a complete vehicle.

History

Chassis

The WZ551, finalized in 1984, was the first wheeled armored personnel carrier developed by China. It is also a widely recognized and extensively exported wheeled vehicle. Throughout its long development process and export career, the design team experimented with mounting a wide variety of weapon systems on the chassis, including numerous autocannon turrets.

As early as April 1986, the WZ551 design team began integrating multiple weapon configurations onto the chassis to enhance its versatility and meet potential export demands. Among these, the ZBL92 became the most representative infantry fighting vehicle variant and was exported to various countries through China’s arms trade.

Entering the early 21st century, with the rapid development of China’s armored forces, the firepower system of the ZBL92 gradually became a subject of criticism. Around this time, China introduced the complete fire control and weapon system of the BMP-3 and subsequently developed multiple turret variants based on the 2A72 autocannon.

Among them, the ZPT99 single-man turret was mounted on various older chassis to enhance their combat capabilities. The version installed on the WZ551 chassis was designated ZBL92B. This system was quickly fielded in large numbers and can still be observed in regular PLA training exercises today.

Turret

After introducing the 2A72, Chinese engineers developed multiple export-oriented turret solutions based on this autocannon. Some of these turrets were fitted with protective gun cages (a design concept similar to those seen on various Ukrainian turrets), while others were equipped with different missile systems to counter armored targets.

In 2010, the military magazine Ordnance Knowledge published an interview with a turret manufacturer. The article showcased several types of autocannon turrets, including one designated HJ8-30 (official name: SW1). Its internal layout and specifications were presented in detail.

The turret’s primary armament consists of four HJ-8 anti-tank missiles (with four additional missiles carried as reloads) and a 30mm autocannon (with over 250 rounds of ammunition). The total weight does not exceed 1.7 tons. It features dual-axis stabilization and thermal imaging capability.

Images shown in the article depicted the turret being tested on various chassis. One photograph clearly showed the SW1 turret mounted on a WZ551 chassis test vehicle, demonstrating the turret’s compatibility and modular design.

In War Thunder

The in-game BTR-82AT and BTR-3E have already demonstrated the viability of the “wheeled chassis + 2A72 autocannon + ATGM” configuration within the game’s balance framework. The WZ551-SW1’s overall setup almost completely overlaps with theirs (it could even be described as the Chinese equivalent of the BTR-3E).

Considering that the Chinese tech tree currently still lacks a sufficient lineup of infantry fighting vehicles, the WZ551-SW1 could be introduced as a slightly lower-ranked vehicle of this type, helping to fill that gap while maintaining gameplay consistency.
