Work-In-Progress: Regenerative Steering — Should We Add It? Try It & Leave Your Feedback!

It should not be added if it does not come in the form of a toggle. Even in games where it is well polished it just does not work well for the kind of game WT in most scenarios.

Take this clip of GHPC for example. This roughly 35 KPH turn is piss poor compared to in game. Even the fully loaded 70T SEP V3 turns better this. WT ground for 12 years has had maps made in mind for how tanks already drive. If we had massive maps like Squad where constantly shooting and scooting was emphasized it would be fine, but this game is mostly built around brawling. Even the more open maps like fields of poland are true to this. Despite how much open area there is, most of the fighting occurs at the two city objectives. Regenerative steering would be an utter nightmare on maps like sweden and advance the rhine.

A resounding yes, and I’m sorry to break it to you who want a toggle but that’s not realistic. Either tanks have regenerative steering modeled or they don’t, there’s no picking or choosing.

In fact, reckless maneuvers like hard turn at maximum speed isn’t something the game should allow you to do (without consequence) anyhow!

In real life this risks throwing your track, and I feel this should be reflected in game.

Flight assist for mosue aim on planes also not realistic. Repair times are also not realistic. You actively sabotaging implementation of the feature you want with such attitude. Making it “all or nothing” will only result in “resounding” rejection of this feature.

Flight assist is just part of abstracting real plane controls into a control system conventient for the player.

Letting you do clutch breaking in a leopard 2 (or regenerative steering) when it suits you goes against the mechanics of the machine in question, it’s just not possible

Literally same can be applied in our case. Idk how you can’t see it.

Yea so next up lets add warping to airplanes from high G turns. Next time you have a dogfight you must land for maintenance or next time your wing might break. While we are at it lets add rotor tilt to helicopters. You thought you were going to dodge that missile? Nope your rotors break off and you crash. Lets also add hull break back. Lets also add a random chance your tank gets stuck in mud.

Yes. A proud yes even if it becomes untoggleable

Reason 1: It is more realistic

Reason 2: Japanese unique vehicles benefit a lot from this. And if the mechanic is really bad, other unique vehicles like Leclerc or Ariete will benefit. I do not care what happens to copy pasted Leopards. They should not be here in the first place

Highkey that would be a good thing since overpressure proved to be inadequate for the role. We need both overpessure AND hull break ideally. Overpressure allows tanks to tank FAB3000 to the UFP because it’s HE pen can’t pen the 140mm surface it landed on. Or some other funny places like machineguns.

Keybind for it to be on or off

If by flight assist you mean the system that makes your plane follow your mouse cursor, it’s plainly not the same thing. That’s a necessary abstraction to allow players to fly using mouse and keyboard.

Making a leopard handle in a completely different way from reality is not neccesary. What mechanism makes the tank turn has no relation to player input.

And neither is this.

Like I said earlier, this is control abstraction to make the game playable on different devices

Lol thats just cope. The physics in mouse aim is playable on other devices too.

Funny how many people ask for it when basically anyone that actually played when it was a thing agrees its a horrendous mechanic and worse than overpressure by a far margin lol

The only reason why tanks handle the way they do (everyone uses clutch break) is because gaijin had no implementation of differential steering. But now they do and they ask us if we want to correct the vehicles that use this in real life. I think it’s unreasonable to then say “I want both actually”

Either the tank is modeled with it’s real steering system or it stays on the simplified clutch break. Those are the options I think are consistent

Actually its not. The current system is essentially just your driver automatically applying brakes. Theres been numerous things in games that are left automatic for qol.

How is it unreasonable? Providing both parties with what they want would be far from unreasonable.

I support the addition of regenerative steering, but my issue is that it likely at first only selectively applied to only modern tanks like it has been so far on the dev server, with it slowly being trickled back to world war 2 tanks like detailed damage models.

Many world war 2 tanks are capable of regenerative steering, The Clectrac steering systems found on American tanks (M3 Lee, M4 Sherman, M3 and M5 Stuarts and the M24) along with the Henschel steering systems used on the Tiger I and Tiger II, and the British Merritt-Brown gearbox (Churchill, Cromwell, Comet, Challenger, early Centurion) with these being a few major examples, many other world war 2 vehicles should be capable of regenerative steering as well.

Worth indicating that low-speed driving with regen steering in WT is also still not as close as real MBT’s can do it, they gotta do some tweaks

If it has to be an opt-in like realistic optics placement, so be it, but it’d be very nice if it didn’t end up being wasted by a majority vote overrun by people that barely clear the level of “shooting at the other team without comitting suicide”.
