Work-In-Progress: Regenerative Steering — Should We Add It? Try It & Leave Your Feedback!

I dont like it. First: it just restricts the ability to maneuver with the tanks so the many town battle maps would be unplayable. Second: it doesnt give you any advantage from being able to drive in a constant curve. Third: I will be frustrating to learn because we are used to the old system so fewer people would play them. Fourth: it would automaticly buff all other tanks that doesnt have this system. So please dont add this to the game

  1. Wheeled vehicles existed for years and somehow they played on “town battle maps”.
  2. Its not one tank that will get it, but all tanks that had it, so, your enemy will be in balance with you.
  3. Devs can… update maps with tight streets, you know. If these maps will be less playable. They do hide maps for redesign from time to time.

On open maps or open parts of the maps it does give you an advantage. And, surprise, there are a small amount of pure “town maps” and most have either big open parts/flanks or are purely open fields. And the ones that are in the game have wide streets. A small amount of maps have tight streets and forces players to go there.

As a coder myself, I hate this exact argument people make against objectively good additions that either follow the spirit of a project or fix something. You know, people get used to bugs as well. So, no fixes? People get used to fake vehicle parameters, so, no reports with documents? Games are all about learning and re-learning, its like, the main thing that makes games interesting to humans.

It would buff tanks with differential on open maps and “buff” tanks without it on tight maps. How many town maps are there and how many of them are tight enough to be unplayable? Sounds like “swimming feature buffs these tanks and nerfs other tanks, literally unplayable, I can’t swim on abrams”, idk.

No, it doesn’t. See for yourself. Besides city maps are the minority.

Ah right, let’s keep a completely shit system just because it’s familiar.

Right now it’s only frustrating because tanks have wrong values (like the Leo 2 with it’s wrong neutralGearRatio value) and because of the bugs, like the one that keeps the throttle at 100% even when you are only holding down A or D. Otherwise it’s a lot more natural feeling and WAY less tedious. What’s frustrating is how every tank feels like they have 1/3 of their real horsepower since one of the tracks is always braking. Look at the Scimitar comparison video, the current handling is a bad joke.

Fourth: it would automaticly buff all other tanks that doesnt have this system.

Tanks with regenerative steering would be running circles around tanks that don’t have it. The only situation where it might perform worse is the ability to make a 180 turn instantly (which is highly unrealistic to begin with). Literally a SINGLE situation out of 100

Why are you showing this if it isn’t an official test?

Not sure if its just me, but the Leo 2’s regenerative steering feels a bit more responsive now

They’ve made massive changes to their RS yes

Was this datamined?

Yes

do you know what has changed exactly?

Bro must’ve missed a memo here.

?? Nothing has been datamined regarding regen steering. Any differences felt is merely placebo, I’ve not experienced any major changes to it yet.

and as you said earlier thats a TES with 1217hp, not 1314

Anyone who can’t see how huge the improvement is is just being obtuse at this point

ngl I completely forgot to check the engine power on my test vehicle since the files were before the engine got buffed lol, but still further proves the point about regen steering given the significant disadvantage in P/W ratio yet still drove way better than a basic Challenger 2 with the default braking system.

16 vs 20.5 hp/ton and the 16hp/ton won purely because of regenerative steering lol

@Kobes-Kamov @Ravanex @SPANISH_AVENGER thought you guys might be interested but with the help of @Fireball_2020, I’ve modified the Challenger 2 TES (now with the correct 1314hp) neutralGearRatio value of default 13 to 10.5.

One tiny drawback is that the neutral steering takes a bit more effort to start, but in city driving, it takes corners quite well now.

This guy gets it.
It is how it should be implemented.

That looks great, its actually somewhat realistic for the CR2s neutral steering to be a bit clunky as well

I was disappointed to see no apparent changes or adjustments in today’s Dev.

Devs should just get your code straight up, you have made the best iteration of regenerative steering yet.

It should be implemented across the board JUST like this, NO TOGGLES.

This iteration is perfect not to lose speed as it is better to drive across streets. NO DOWNSIDE. Most realistic.

Eh I don’t mind a toggle as long as it’s not like the cobra button. The toggle I refer to is a setting in the menu that allows players to choose between “Experimental Steering” and it’s an on/off that can only be selected in the main menu. We have to smooth the transition from one system to another end of the day.

You humble me too much, I’m just someone that’s insanely passionate about this system that I am willing to do it for free.

Personally I think if a toggle is introduced it should strictly be something you can change outside of matches. You shouldn’t even be able to change it in a match through the ingame settings.

If you want the old steering then that’s fine, but you can’t be picking and choosing between the two in the same match. You change it before you start a match and stick with it untill it ends, then afterwards you can change it for the next one.

Also in my opinion it should be a blanket thing, you shouldn’t be able to turn it on or off for specific vehicles, its on or off for everything.

This way you keep the realism aspect of tanks not being able to switch between regenerative and clutch brake steering by keeping them entirely separate, but people who want clutch brake steering can still use it.
