Work-In-Progress: Regenerative Steering — Should We Add It? Try It & Leave Your Feedback!

Just take a wider turn. Or is that too difficult for you? Sounds like arcade is more your speed.

Didnt the maus use electric motors for drive? Therefore steering could just be done by moderating the rpm on each side directly?

May be an unpopular opinion but I don’t think any tank should be able to do this in realistic mode without damaging or throwing the track

Anyway, here’s now a 13 minute compilation of me driving across the streets of Tunisia, Poland and Rhine with Regenerative-Steered Type 10 and EVEN Leopard 2, which everyone has acknowledged to have a currently flawed iteration of the mechanic, since so many are convinced that “it will be impossible to drive across streets with Regenerative Steering”…

Also, it’s extremely compressed because the Forum has a file limit size of 60 MB, so had to assassinate the videos to be able to upload them here, hahah.

EDIT: I forgot to add another video I had recorded with Type 10. Then it would have been 15 minutes of footage. Dang! I’m adding it here:

Yup, so if I get it right you should be able to transfer excess electrical power from one side to the other so you can make gradual turns without losing speed

In theory yes, however i expect the motors were sensative to “overboost” given the loading.

The possibility is interesting at least. I do think some of the heavier and underpowered tanks have the most to gain from this mechanic.

Absolutely, which is why i’d like to see testing expanded to other vehicles where the benefits can really be shown.

Exactly

I see only one problem on the video - automatic gearbox is not working properly, the driver should lower the gear way sooner, not when you literally stand still. That will fix most of issues with this feature.

Look at the guy using manual gearbox in Tunisia:

They should just tune automatic gearbox.

So far I think it’s an amazing mechanic, even if it still feels a bit rough around the edges it’s a massive improvement especially for tanks like the Type 10 that would lose disproportionate amounts of speed with the old system.
So from me it’s a +1 to add this mechanic already.

That said I also understand players that have issues with it in tighter city maps, so I hope there will be a way to still use the old steering when needed.
For that there’s already ideas for a toggle, but personally for the sake of streamlining mobility controls I believe it would be far better to let regenerative steering be a combined “forward/backward + left/right” press on vehicles that have it, while just pressing “left/right” should instead result in the current track braking. This way it’s an intuitive control scheme (to keep speed press the speed button), and also doesn’t require a new control mapping for players like me that ran out of easily reachable buttons to use.

Agreed.

Regenerative steering must NOT be cancelled or ditched;

Instead, it needs to be fleshed out and polished.

It’s a really great feature, but please add a switch or driving mode so that both can be used

ou literally spent several minutes avoiding sharp turns just so you wouldn’t show the mechanic in a bad light. And even so, you ran into multiple turns where you had to completely stop the tank just to make the turn.

Then why don't you drive through my route and show other players how good this new mechanic actually is?

Oh, right, how could I forget! In that case, the new mechanic is going to look absolutely awful, and you guys definitely don’t want that.
Fine, I’ll go ahead and show the difficulties a player will face when using this new mechanic.

Wait, do you mean that…

NO WAY!

You mean that I had to drive the 64 ton tank… like a 64 ton tank instead of a racing go-kart? No way!

(And of course you keep ignoring the repeated disclaimers that Leopard 2’s steering is a currently flawed iteration of the mechanic that would turn much better at lower speeds when polished.)

Should we teach you how to turn?

How do you feel about a game mechanic that lets you repair a destroyed gun barrel in just 20 seconds?

Honestly I’m on the fence as it is now. I agree that it needs more polish. Ideally it would be extended to many more vehicles before going live but if drop tanks are anything to go by we could expect regenerative steering to trickle down to older vehicles in… maybe 5 years?

Last i checked using full real in arb gives u sim fm

The quality of the arguments just keep degrading…
