Why was the QF 3.7 Ram Horsepower Doubled?

The QF Ram’s Horsepower was increased from 400hp (same as all other Lee’s and the M4/M4A1) to 800hp, giving it a higher P/W than a Leopard 2 (27.17 hp/ton) at 27.59 hp/ton

this has to be a bug right?

Welcome to siket dokumins. They do prove that

nah man i just out a turbo charger in it from a ferrari

So it isn’t a bug?

No

this unbelievably isnt a bug

Jarms made a questionable bug report based on a document saying that there was one tested with the 800hp version of the engine.

I am 99% certain that this was a error in the documentation as putting 800hp through such a transmission would rip it apart so fast the panthers transmission would look robust and long lasting.

Heres the source.
I for one think this was a mistake for the 450hp version from a M4a6, which the transmission would actually be able to handle.

Heck, going by that it suggests the entire Ram family was given an 800HP engine, as it lists it in the section that’s general information if the things making it up.

But it didn’t look like even the late model had an upgraded engine to that, but the same as the M3/M4.

That seems possible.

Honestly I have no clue, I haven’t really bothered to even try to dig into information on this thing.

seems possible until you realise how overstressed that engine would be compared to on an aircraft.
id be amazed if it would last more than a few miles before breaking catastrophically

The “seems possible” was in relation to the engine being wrong and actually being the 450 horsepower diesel version.

Sorry if it wasn’t clear.

A similar event occured with the Churchill in Irish service, where they tried (and apparently succeeded) to fit a Merlin engine into it. The British also did the same with a Crusader with a Meteor engine.

The Merlin engine (from a Seafire) produced 1,230 hp, I have no clue how the transmission handled that (perhaps the engine was derated) but it seemingly did. The Churchills original engine only produced 350 horsepower.

The test Crusaders had a Meteor engine producing 510 hp in a tank weighing only around 16 tonnes, this give it a top speed of in excess of 50mph (80kph).

I have no idea how they managed to do it in the Crusader or Churchill, but persumably if it was possible for them, 800hp for the ram could also be possible.

those engines were extremley downtuned. to save fuel and gearboxes as well as the stress of a 25-40 ton tank compared to a spit

The Meteor engine was supposedly kept at 600 horsepower in the Crusader.

Presumably the Merlin engine was downtuned, but we don’t really know by how much

edit. Documents say the Merlin was actually rated to 510hp for initial tests, which is still a significant upgrade over the original 340hp engine

these were very early marks of meteor on the British crusaders so weren’t full power

Ed francis from armoured archives shared some good info on it in this thread

I just had a read through there, as I corrected they were set to 510 horsepower for the Crusader, someone else seemed adamant there was a 1000 horsepower version made but I dont see any valid proof of it

At the end of the day I think the gaijin should just follow the documentation for the QF. Ram, its clearly written there and seems to be historically accurate. Does it bring into question how it mechanically could have worked? Sure, but many vehicles in war thunder aren’t modelled in ways that would work in real life.

that guy is quite a delusioned soul with the capabilities of British tanks ill keep it at that.

I mean engine swaps can be bolted to whatever with adaptor plates its just a matter of practicality
