Why no realistic maps?

Allways i hear you sayin “realism” but the maps are far from realism. Many are Manga Style and you can tell how artifically you do hard obscuring line of sight in exchange for fantasy style maps.
Today i noticed you altered again maps just for the sake of pushing players to CQC.

Also literally every hill is in an angle where 95% of tanks cant go hull down due lack of gun depression. On top of it i see roads not on it anymore theyre at the hill on the side in an angle no car or any vehicle could drive on it because it would slide down sideways. it look so stupid and destroy a lot of immersion. Not to mention that you place literally a bush or tree at every corner where u would expect the enemy is coming from.
This all feels completly off and looks ugly. On top of it the destricted areas get altered again and again. There is so much need of possibilitys now that you completly destroyed the last 2 years ending up in a ugly looking fantasy lala land with no real life logic anymore.

I give it a meh 2.7. No caps no cursing.
That said, I agree with much of what you wrote.
A lot of it is user expectations from other games that have exaggerated terrain and of course a focus on CQB. So Gaijin panders to that.

Realism is close to far ranges.
Having only far ranges would be as unrealistic as having only close ranges.

If you want to argue that players are preferring specific maps when you’re playing, go for it.

Your post however is a general rant, and it makes a base claim that is itself incorrect.

cuz they want cqc for brain-free engagements

gaijin thinks the players want flat terrain bar fights of maps.

dont get me wrong i enjoy them on occasion, especially in a heavy tank in a downtier but i will always prefer a map i can hull down snipe or flank&spank rampage my way though an enemy team.

Not exactly accurate. You just havent found the sides of hills to abuse fully yet from the sounds of it.

theres a couple of those on maginot line that are really dumb

its like they make a PNG for the floor texture and then do the topography with basic blender tools

i miss this spot of 38th parallel. the other side has a much easier to abuse spot still yet i cant scout things here any more.

also let us have traction. stop claiming a 30 degree hill is too much for tanks that could do 45degree hills like its nothing

BVVd_ answers these questions in the Q&A with War Thunder Game Director Viacheslav Bulannikov! video himself. For simplification: Larger maps are not considered because don’t bring the instant action expected from smaller maps, quick matches means more movement, more movements indirectly means money. If at least ground simulator mode had specially-made larger maps for compensation, it’s very frustating at some point.

At least in SB you can dodge suffering the atrocious maps via plane…

Because many of us enjoy CQC maps.

I like maps where it’s like the Russian’s storming Grozny in the 90s, except we get to duke it out in tanks rather than infantry deleting us from the buildings we’ve decided to drive past.

People making Arcade into something to be ashamed of has been the doom for people who want RB to be actually realistic.

We now have people wanting RB to be Arcade, but without markers and stigma and they outnumber us.

Game is not even realistic, Its more of an arcade game. Devs might not care about realism, they would rather have a small CQC maps so that matches would be shorter instead of larger realistic maps. I should not even blame them as many players are against larger maps in both Air and ground. They should just make a separate game mode with only larger maps but they won’t even do that. If you want realism, war thunder is not the game for it

Thats the main issue with WT maps. Maps shouldn’t be either/or, maps should be made for all playstyles. So if someone want to snipe map should provide that too or if someone wants CQB map should provide that too. Many of WT maps are either/or. One cannot have 1.5 km engagement if whole map is 1.2x1.2 km. Add to that messy map rotation you have player frustration.

maybe loads of people enyoy cqc maps, because we have loads of cqc maps and therefore players that like those maps get attracted more to the game, than those who want more realistic maps?

The problem is that spawns are static, so there’s no dynamic with larger maps.

I enjoy playing on large open maps but of course it’s super annoying when you have to drive for 5 minutes to get out of spawn to get into a position, only to get killed and repeat the process.

It’s probably the same with top tier aircraft.
Whats the point of flying on large maps, only to die instantly against some fully spaded much better plane, while your own aircraft is stock and underpowered?

So the solution is to just decrease engagement times and keep battles short.

Another problem is that our only game mode is basically „throw every vehicle into the same arena“.
Even though they are obviously not meant to fight in the same environment.

Unless you play the US (and some UK vehicles) many of the tanks struggle to get a decent hull-down position on many of the maps. The terrain is quite steep at the apex and you have to expose a lot of your tank to take a shot.

And then there’s the Russian tanks with their numerous -4 or even -3 gun depressions.
I really, really hate getting stuck on Frozen Pass while playing Russian garage.

theres usually a spot where normal gun depression can work.

USSR does get screwed by this but those tanks are often far better for running and gunning

I hear some saying there are hill where i can hull down or maps are too large it takes minutes to engage. Those hills at useless spots in many occasions thats why they arent so steep. I play only top tier, sometimes high tier. there is no going back for me so my thoughts on this are just for that Top BRs.

What iam talking about, the big maps are designed you have to drive forward for minutes until u see someone just because for example like the pradesh map, they not only placed 50 meter high trees to obscure the line of sight no theyre are even undestrucble for many ammo types, like the apsdf 114mm pen from the namer fox example. on other map i can shoot similar trees with a freaking MG. That feels so forced and is so anyoing because as some say people dont like big maps because you have to drive for minutes. But this issue is a product of the map designers trying to prevent people engaging from far by adding obstacles at 90% of the “good” postions and leaving no other option.

I play like 12 yrs i believe, i am medicore and dont care about stats and i also dont bother knowing everything about different armor types and data, i just shoot at stuff and find out what works and keep going. But when it comes to tactical gameplay i must say this game is absolutly hollow. I love playin IFVs but on most of the maps theyre useless because even if i like to stay behind the frontline as observation post and try to get a kill here and there with Spikes or my gun on other light vehicles i end up going somewhere to the middle of the map to encounter a MBT because i simply cant see anything from far. Trees, bushes or steep hils and this game wasnt like this yrs ago. i feel in the last 2 yrs they made the maps worse for the tactical and longrange players in favor for the head on CQC players. Here is the big advantage of the russian tanks: Slim silouhette and strong armor. In the first second of contact many people fail to aim on the weak spots because its tiny compared to the most other nations.

I dont want to bash the russian players here but the map desing in thier favor. How often iam in a MBT and a T´series MBT cruising around the corner and we shoot at each other in a 50 to 100 meter only distance and my shot misses cruicial parts while him just shot anywhere and criples me and i cant even reload anymore. I see the git gud comments coming but thats my expirience i have and its telling this playstyle i encounter only against the russian nation and i assume the map designers know this. its a russian game after all.
