Why is HESH still in this horrific state

It does looks to be that HESH might have a lot smaller explosive radius.

These are against the Tiger II, which has 40mm hull roof armor, where i am trying to hit as far up on the turret possible while it will still over pressure

152mm HE from the 2S3M with 5,86kg TNTe

120mm HESH from the Chieftain Mk 3 with 6,53kg TNTe

The HE has a lot bigger radius here compared to the HESH, even though HESH have more HE filler.

It is actually very weird with the explosive radius, since when you try the a bit larger HE and HESH against something like a Jagdtiger, the HESH i tested have a a lot bigger radius compared to the HE, even though the TNTe difference isn’t too big.

155mm HE from the AS-90 with 14,8kg TNTe

155mm HESH from the T58 with 16,85kg TNTe

The High-explosive penetration of those two shells are near identical, with only a difference of 0,3mm pen.

Furthermore, the more I test this, the more I realize that the overpressure mechanic doesn’t work perfectly with HESH shells—even though it is much better than before. Aside from the fact that 120mm HESH shells seem completely ineffective (as I’ve observed), try firing at specific points on the T-44’s turret with the FV4005: you’ll see that, sometimes, overpressure simply fails to trigger for no apparent reason. In any case, Gaijin really needs to focus on significantly buffing HESH damage; hitting a Panther’s armor only to knock out the driver is unacceptable—though I won’t dwell on that subject again. An interesting side note: I don’t know what Gaijin is cooking up regarding overpressure right now, but look at the RBT-5’s rocket (equivalent to 130 kg of TNT): on the live server, it is absolutely mediocre, whereas on the dev server, it is just as powerful as the Sturmtiger’s rocket.

It’s really bad on live servers right now, I shot a SA-18 with Challenger 1 HESH and it literally did nothing. The 120mm should’ve sailed through his front and exploded once it hit the engine block, but instead it did nothing. Dude should’ve been atomized with only a crater left behind.

Does HESH retain its weird “track overpressure” mechanic in dev?

I love watching 183mm HESH hit the side of a T-34 turret, only to kill the turret crew and that’s it.
Well worth that 25s reload time on an aced crew.
Immediate return to hangar moment.

yes

The 120mm rounds still haven’t been fixed on the dev server, and neither has HESH in general.

Yeah, it’s clearly nonsense. I hope we can get back to the 2018–2022 era of HESH, when it was actually coded pretty well. With the FV4005, even if you hit the frontal plate of a Tiger II, IS-2, IS-6, or Jagdpanther, it would one-shot them—just like in real life.

It’s only just occurred to me because I’d taken a break from the game but-

Why on gods green earth is the FV4005 6.0 when the M55 is 3.7?
These two vehicles are functionally identical, they even both have the limited turret traverse arc.

If anything I’d argue the M55 is the better vehicle between the two given that the only downsides it has over the 4005 are a 4 second slower reload, slightly worse traverse speeds and about 100m/s slower shell velocity.

On the plus side the thing is notably smaller the FV4005, has a higher hp/t than the FV4005, has about double the top speed forward, double the top speed in reverse and most importantly a shell that is actually reliable given it is HE not HESH.

There is no way that the FV4005 should be sat at 6.0 when the M55 that fills the same niche but does it better is at 3.7. This is absurd.

How you fix HESH is simple.

Code it as HE with more penetration, where if it pens at all, the tank is overpressured and one-shot.

Then the spalling pattern doesn’t matter, because the tank dies if you simply penetrate it at all.

thats how World of tanks Does it.

And honestly its the better system.

thats not how hesh works…

B-b-but my T55 upper front plate!?

It would have to be called something other than overpressure, but the catastrophic internal damage (taking into account scab size, speed, and ricochet) combined with high pressure should destroy/incapacitate everything inside the affected fighting compartment (aside from particularly large vehicles)

so…

Hull break

HESH even with its weird overpressure mechanic right now is more reliable than regular HE in overpressuring tougher tanks mainly because they can overpressure almost anything when tracks are visible. Not to mention that if you can’t overpressure it reliably you can brute force using HESH’s spall which have high enough pen.

HESH makes a big damn sound blast which can incapacitate crews on its own. If crew can’t hear due to bleeding eardrums, they’re effectively dead for all intents and purposes because the commander can’t tell the driver what to do nor the gunner who to shoot.

Yes, caving in “sloped bullshit” on T-54s, T-55s, T-62s, IS-3s, IS-4Ms, IS-6s, IS-7s, T-10s, and others is the literal design purpose of HESH, and making it straight-up overpressure-kill is the easiest manner to make HESH work to where Gaijin can go claim “see, we fixed it, now stop bugging us about it!”

No it’s literally the sound blast itself popping crews’ eardrums. They can’t hear, they can’t functionally drive the tank. Tank’s mechanically operable potentially but knocked out of battle.

Thus, HESH simply penetrating the fighting compartment should be enough to “kill” it.

No, literally overpressure is what I had in mind. Instead of explosion overpressure, it’s sound blast overpressure popping crews’ eardrums so nobody can hear and the tank cannot function any longer.

not modelled in game, otherwise revenge cas no lifers would be even more OP as bombs will deafen you even harder

Id much prefer for hull break to return for HE and HESH, theres no way most vehicles can survive a 165/183mm HESH or 155mm HE. That needs to be reflected. The crew being turned to paste- thats another issue, crews survive .50 cal rounds to the face at the moment so i guess we all have superman as crew

That doesn’t help 90mm, 105mm, or 120mm HESH though. And would render eventual 76mm HESH whenever it gets added to WT totally dead on arrival.

I am wanting those to one-tap whatever they pen, because frankly unless they hit some absurdly empty spot, they basically did.
