Ive been meaning to ask this ever since I started playing War Thunder just over a year ago.
Just before I started to play a lot of WT a map by the name of “White Rock Fortress” got removed. I’m confused as to why as it looks like a better more dynamic version of Iberian castle. It appears to have had lots of rewarding flanker routes and a good balance of CQC and long-range engagement areas. Why was it disliked to the point of being removed yet some real dumpster fires of maps like Red Desert are still in rotation (despite high rarity)? The clear spawn camping spots as seen in the map overview video on War Thunders channel from eight years ago look like they can easily be cleaned up so I don’t understand why it wasn’t reworked similar to how Hurtgen Forest has had tweaks.
My main question:
OGs of War Thunder, why did you hate it so much and if it was to return what changes would you implement to make it a better map?
for context I’m a refugee from World of Tanks after that game was mostly abandoned and the playerbase got extremely toxic. After hundreds of hours in both games I must say the map rotation was significantly better in WoT. Even with the sniper alley hell maps making things unpleasant, some of the maps like “Empires border”, “fisherman’s bay” and “seigfried line” feel like maps that would work incredibly well in war thunder if scaled right, if WoT can make a good map WT doesn’t have an excuse
War Thunder outshines WoT in every way, community, detail and gameplay. All but its maps. I don’t understand how Gaijin has fallen so short on map diversity and quality
Yeah War thunder has quite a major issue imo when it comes to a lack of maps / map diversity. and yet they are sat on a load of old maps that are no longer in the MM rotation. Fixing/overhauling them. Or just straight up returning them. Seems to be a really easy solution to the lack of maps
Map rotation as of late has been really bad, and I don’t mean when the rotation bugged and the only map was poland for a week. I don’t see advance to the Rhine or north holland much right now and I miss Pradesh dearly.
It does appear that theres a lot of maps of old that with a freshen up would be brand new to a lot of the playerbase and a nostalgic trip to OGs
White Rock is supposedly being reworked right now and will be returned… ? In the next update?
I don’t remember anything particularly wrong with it other than being kind of silly. A tank sized castle.
I havent played warthunder all that long but I have noticed throughout my matches in each BR bracket there is a group of like 5 or so maps that I always see. Playing the new Tomcat I have gotten City twice, Spaceport once, and Golan Heights 13 times. In 6.7 ground it feels like I only ever see Sun City, Poland, Holland, Normandy, and El Alamein and very rarely maps like Sweden, Finland, or Berlin. The game definitely doesnt have the most variety, one can only play Aral Sea at 7.0 so many times before taking a pair of scissors and cutting your corpus callosum would be a far more enjoyable experience.
Do you have a link as proof for white rock getting a rework? I love castles and enjoy the WT maps with extreme CQC and open areas in one. Fuldas castle is probably my favourite point on any map in the game so a full map of that is a dream come true for me
Im lucky to live in Britain where we have more castles than anywhere else so I’ve seen how massive they can get
Caernarfon castle (the castle I get my username from, I just use the English spelling instead of the welsh)
and Malbork (the largest castle in the world, its in Poland and looks amazing) are both almost large enough for tanks to pass through their portcullises and hold two points on a map.
this is the best description of lobotomising yourself I’ve ever seen, I will be stealing this.
I do wish that the amount of common maps we saw was more than Poland, Poland but big, Poland but snow, Poland but urban, Poland but urban in the 21st century and Poland but as a sandy castle.
the common maps all feel the same and I wish we had something different more often
As much as I love some of the maps I’ve listed god do I ever just want to make a brain slurry of the person who thought it was a good idea to make the most common map in rotation. I love urban maps like Sweden and Advance to the Rhine but that doesn’t mean I want to see them every time I load the T-80U. I’d also think it smart to address the one sidedness of some maps. On every match of Jungle I’ve played the team that spawns on the left usually ends up beating the shite out of my team so hard they develop a punishment kink and go crawling back.
Long plains-esque maps are somewhat bad too. I love loading into Maginot Line, getting the bad spawn, and getting sniped from 2km while passing over a hill because I stopped focusing on my monitor for 2 seconds. These maps are especially bad in top tier while you’re stock. Every match in the M1A1 AIM I have played on these kinds of maps I have been slammed by either a DM53 or 3BM60 round from 14km away roughly 16 seconds after spawning, give or take a few if I am not immediately ready when I spawn.
All in all the point I’m trying to get across is that we need more maps and more unique maps. Their idea for Flanders was pretty cool with how it changes depending on the time period of the vehicles, if they made more maps somewhat like that it wouldnt be the worst but I really dont want to load into 6.7, get some map like “The Bumhole of the Sea”, get annihlated 3 minutes into the match, switch to 9.3, get the same map but this time theres an aircraft carrier, same thing, switch to 16.7 with the new top tier flying saucer, and get “The Bumhole of the Sea of the Andromeda Galaxy” and its the same thing hust everything is floating like the rapture is happening for everyday household appliances"
Ive never won a match from the south side of berlin but won almost every match from the north it can be awful. Jungle just sucks
A lot of the large maps are missing any kind of cover for kilometres at a time, fields of Poland mostly. it feels like the mapmakers don’t play the game
Yup. I think the worst maps are Fire Arc (for that reason), Seversk (it’s just… bad) and Vietnam (Seversk but there’s water everywhere and it takes way too long to move around the map)
Jungle isnt the worst imo so long as you get the fun side. If not you’d have a much less painful experience snapping your femur in half, ripping it out of your body, turn the two pieces into spears, strapping the two spears to comically large gears like that one scene from Cars, and sitting directly in between the gears while they slowly inch closer to you each rotation while slowly taking pieces of your prefrontal cortex out and grinding them into slim jims.
It honestly does feel like Gaijin employees dont play their own game, we need to get some like worm in their company to make some bug so horrendous that the only way the devs can pinpoint where it is and what it is is by playing the game
we need to teach Smin to code so he can be a dev, I know he plays the game as I’ve played a match with him, he may get maps fixed. maybe he can add the EAP too
We can just subconsciously teach him everything he needs to know about the WT spaghetti then give him some like sleeper agent activation phrase and watch him go
Oh also unrelated but I definitely didnt just spend 5 minutes trying to find the Caernarvon thinking it was Italian
