What some do not realize is that one thing tends to be connected to a half dozen or so more parts of the game… and then those parts are connected to another half dozen or so parts of the game… and so on… so "just slapping some code in could technically break the whole game." as you said

Developers want to know if any unforeseen issues or complications and or consequences arise and gain Feedback from it and or just to help kill bugs…
Developers will catch most bugs and unforeseen issues or complications, but a million players tend to test a million parts of the game all at once, and someone is bound to find something pretty quick that may have a negative impact on testing or the outcome of said test
But… yeah the whole point of the test, is to get player feedback on the whole thing, they want player involvement because they know players care about the direction of the game
