Why do .50 cal machineguns make empty bombers explode?

This. Now all .50 cal machineguns just make bombers explode as if they fired explosive shells. Is this intended? Happens both in Realistic Air and Realistic Ground.

Maybe an Incendiary or explosive shell detonating the bomber fuel tank

Air modes: Cal50 detonate bombload too easily
