Because people didn’t want to play through coastals to get to the “big boats” first.
The coastal boat before the first destroyer was also often really expensive RP wise, often 50 or 60k only for the first desyroyer to be 18k RP.
I cannot stress enough that it was that “roadblock coastal” that was the main issue. splitting the trees was not the only solution and imo, it’s one of the worst ones like you may have noticed
Funny thing is they could’ve just removed the blockading 61000-270000 rp vessels requirement or just given a free “destroyer” type at Rank III an bobs your uncle no need for this godforsaken mess we deal with daily.
61k iirc for japan was the Kaibōkan Shōnan & the 270k was the Project 159 for the soviet.

Yes, exactly this. The only problem was that rank II “roadblock” coastal. But instead of just fixing that they ruined research efficiency and reduced the value of quite a few premiums.
I just wanted them to put in the damn same tech tree and remove the ridiculous amount of RP and money to research a 4.0 boat that is twice as expensive as a battleship.
Not only separated, but also those boats are suffering a much lower reward rate; consider that the maximum for big ships is already 1800% SL, our toptier boats now are still about 1200%, even some of DDs have high reward rate( and yes much cheaper)
