Ive been fustrated with the impotent APDS on the chieftain ever since I started playing a year ago and saw in an old war thunder video that the APDS used to be significantly better, why was it changed? and why is it at a higher BR now with a worse shell?
It doesn’t have a worse shell, and back then APDS was far worse.
The round today still weighs 7.48kg and pens 322mm of 60 degree armor.
With 280mm of 60 degree armor at 2km.
No real change other than better fragmentation implemented last year.
The BR in this video was from a while ago, before ground was decompressed and the BR’s of all the vehicle surrounding it have increased since also, it hasn’t really moved relative to the tanks it will face. This is also from before the formula they used to calculate penetration was changed, though as Razervon has already said it hasnt really changed much in terms of what and where it can and cannot pen. Overall the Cheifs have their strenghts and they have their weaknesses. Currently, reload and mobility matters more than hull down capability on a lot of maps and in a lot of situations, so the Cheifs tend to suffer in those situations, which isnt to say they are useless, but something like a Tam or Bastion/Drozd will generally be a lot more useful overall

trust me i know they suffer unless you’re hull down, its just miserable how weak the shell is compared to what the Soviets get at 8.7-9.3

The Chieftain has higher penetration at all angles and ranges over the T-62, and far better sloped performance over the T-55AM/AMD.

The Soviets have weaker ammo than L15A3 at 8.7.
Soviets don’t get as-good ammo until 9.0, where Britain has Chieftain Mk10.

Because it is a British tank, the thickness of the “seek destroy” chief tank commander tower has been changed from 140mm to 40mm, and there is now a probability that it will be penetrated by 35mmAPHE; The top armor has also been weakened, and the turret speed has decreased by about 1 °/s

Who needs the commander hatch weakpoint when you have the gunner optic. I have died to this 4 times by AA and another half dozen by artillery vehicles.
