Why are the Sherman .50 cals in RB mode so useless against planes?

How are they gimped when US gets a massive bonus from having .50s in the first place? An extra weapon with all the benefits and no downsides, no exposed crew member except on the M18, which clearly showcases how it should have been.

100%. And more often than not they’ll be one of the few targets you can actually kill due to being open tops.

I agree, other big caliber machine types perform much better, but for some reason 50cal’s suck against planes. Something must be done about this. An increase in damage against air vehicles is best fix for this.

They will not do anything about it and we have to realize CAS is here to stay and to stay OP over all ground.

Dont move. You get 30 seconds of spawn protection if you stay still after spawning, the only thing you can move is your turret.

If you start driving off, you lose the spawn protection.

You got to learn the trade. SPAA are light vehicles hence CAS planes love you.

When I play SPAA they love me, but I love them too, so its mutual. I want them because I want to be surrounded by their wrecks. And once they start to hate you and you get swarmed it becomes a hilarious cat and mouse game and they forget what they are doing (and starts to do less intelligent stuff facing SPAA eager to burn you). Besides it takes the heat of from your armored friends trying to capture points so you do good.

So here are some SPAA tactics (that works for me):

  • Don’t use cross hairs but only 1st zoom in. You need good situation awareness, not zodastraw vision. You need to watch out for enemy tanks and figure out airplane headings at the same time. Besides you’re effective in only at fairly close range.

  • Always keep tab on the map, the enemy airplanes approaches, try to figure out where they are heading and locate them visually as early as possible.
Is it you its aiming for? Or are the attacking something else?
Once you get their attack approach clear find an obstacle between you and them and go in for a hull down just like a tank, but instead of having the turret horizontally you want the guns about 45-65 deg angle above the cover.
Check aim to run parallel above the ridges of roof tops or rocks. Stay close to them for cover but not too close to obscure the target (spending time wiggling here to get aim is normal btw). Bombs and rockets usually hit the opposite side and cover will also suck up a fair amount of MG fire.
You can also hide behind cover and wait for targets passing and go out and ambush if pressure is much.

  • Engage in short half- to one second bursts at about 900m. Earlier is a waste, besides you don’t want them to dodge to early, you want them strait, level, nice and yummy (start @1200m if fighter have 20mm guns to distract target abit). Short bursts conserves ammo and keeps aim. Don’t overspray or you clog the target picture with tracers.

  • Fire slightly above the tracking target point (like the 0.5 to x1 gun aiming reticle seperation [~5mm? @1000m on a screen]) if its heading towards you, or in front of its flight heading, to get the target to fly into your bullets (Arcade mode).
However different multi-barrel weapons seems to have different off-sets in aim, possible pending on ammunition and gun arrangement, it could as well be a lower right or left so check it up on a plane heading toward you if you get a new SPAA vehicle.

  • Use some cheap cammo foliage if you have available to cover the vehicle top.

  • Prefer a fully researched vehicle and some XP points for gunnery and airplane spotting (keen vision) which is also good. Also toughen up the crews vitality, they will get lots of grazes and shrapnel damage during the fights.

  • Plan, locate firing position and PLACE your vehicle FRONT TOWARDs an Escape or Exit route (preferable with cover close by).
This is best at angle from air threat so you can quickly step on “W” to get away if the heat get too much. “W” is the only emergency key you’ll need to think of. Most planes have issues targeting you sideways when they are close.
The emergency exit from the position should include: Roads= good to move fast on (with obstacles close at hand). Down hill slopes are good (added speed=distance). Close by buildings, rocks or crevasses in the terrain. These latter are your safe haven.
So look for these when you look for favorable firing positions (operation area). The emergency exit should lead to cover or terrain breaking the air targets line of fire.

  • Many times planes will drop bombs before they get into range so if you feel its too quiet and its a bomber or attack A/c that is heading for you or general operation area - but don’t seem to dive -, displace immediately with emergency “W” to get to safe haven, or try to get as much distance from your earlier position as possible and then take new position. You can still get good bursts as plane passes, or U turns and you’ll be out of the huge blast range that usually follows.

So be cool and learn to love the attention.

If you don’t have the common decency to even let someone leave their spawn in a game (I.e. spawn camping) you are a disrespectful degenerate, that given, when it is the end of the match, and they have 100% garenteed loss, it’s fine.

G r i n d

Lets face it, the economy is so horrid you have to take every kill you can lmao

Yeah, spawncamping is annoying and should be fixed, but I dont blame people for doing it

This is an excellent post, thanks. :)
