Just gonna completely ignore that they won MULTIPLE awards during their Recon service and to this day are some of the most decorated Recon aircraft ever built?
Are you sure you did it with a Swift?
The Swift can’t reverse anything lol it pulls no AOA.
The Swift worked too. It wasn’t the best aircraft but it was good enough.
Awards not from use in actual combat theatres do note. It was in service during the Suez crises so could have been a silly little recce plane then if they thought it could at least do that.
If these awards you speak of are real they were cover ups to go against the media circus that formed around its comical disaster as early as late 1954. This is within weeks of planes like the lightning taking to the skies so you can imagine how a whimpering mess of a fighter would look. Imagine lockheed martin releasing a cessna with an AMRAAM when Boeing is testing the MQ28. its that kind of “wow this is trash” kind of look
it killed Supermarine, and the hunter was around before it. I don’t think it deserves being called “good enough”
it didn’t kill Supermarine, the MILLIONS owed to them by the British government, From unpaid WW2 Era Contracts of the THOUSANDS of Spitfires they produced, that is what killed them.
The Swift, and later the Type 545 were ways to kill them off, Make them dump resources into a plane they asked for, yet never planned on adopting.
its well documented.
A plane can be good even though there are better planes available. It shows the company has been run poorly if it continues to waste money and this project isn’t the only reason they had to sell.
It was very clear by 1941 that we were going to be paying off damages for a very very long time. Yet the companies that fell into the shadows of supermarine pulled out of it because they didn’t create a pile of trash that killed pilots of its first squadron.
It was a clear dead end by 54 and it was their last hope. Besides that companies death helped make vickers Armstrong into BAE systems by acquiring their last few decent engineers. Going the way of Airco was an unfortunate necessity
Don’t know if this is true but it makes sense to harm a company that way if you want them to merge with other aircraft companies.
Not the Swift, however, it still wouldn’t make much of a difference. Anyway, I have no more words. So i pop off.
Its a pretty well known thing how corrupt the aerospace industry in the UK was in the 50s.
Supermarine was owed MILLIONs from WW2, and were using their own money mostly to Finance the Swift and Type-545 Development, and In the Type 545’s case, they produced a Functional, Under budget, prototype that actually exceeded specification’s in many places, only for the project to randomly be killed off, with the Lighting taking its place despite not following a SINGLE one of the Type-545’s specifications suggested by the UK government.
leaving them with a dead end prototype they couldn’t even afford to push the development on any further.
They were killed off to save money, Through shitty politics.
Ive got to say it. The Swift isn’t very swift eh?
Oh no it is, One of the fastest planes at its BR. and it CAN do reversals, or it used to be able to, they nerfed its mobility like 2 years ago.
Id say its bloody brilliant at 8.3-8.7 even if you cant abuse flaps. just a crap dad joke
Then why are you telling us how to dodge missiles with a Swift?
???
It absolutely does.
it isn’t even abusing flaps, they out right were designed to be used at any speed, and doubled as Airbrakes, even in the Cockpit the “Combat” Position for the flaps is also called Airbrake.
It’s well documented in this thread - can’t find anything else supporting it on the 'net
The Swift was not a good a/c, the 545 was produced to its own specification F.105D2 as a development of the Swift, but when the Swift proved not very good it was ditched.
The EE Lightning had an entirely different specification F.23/49 that was unrelated to anything from Supermarine.
Suggesting the Lightning “replaced” the 545 is just nonsense.
airbrakes generally arent deployable at all speeds on any plane in real life. especially if the airbrake is just its flaps at a more extreme angle
Once again no it doesn’t, if you cannot figure it out. Then to each their own.
You realize not all aircraft have the same agility? The 9B will never even see the RP-3 if your plane is in the way.
