War thunder has been adding tons of tank but their maps are all fkin CQC mini-maps? There were very good long range map and they were almost neglected or just forgotten. The tanks they add are all designed for long range combat, especially top fkin tier and the only reason I can think of they are doing all those small map is because they are in favour of Russian brawling tanks, while NATO tanks are all much better at long range. There are NO flanking routes, almost, while they used to have, are now mostly DESTROYED by gaijin. The game feels way less dynamic than before, and it is incredibly boring lately. All the maps that are added are all dumpster fire 101 maps. I am sure I am not the only person who feels this way.
If I have to drive more than 5 seconds before I start slamming my face on my fire button then the game is a boring driving sim and I’m alt tabbing to cookieclicker to hold my miniscule attention span.
ALL of the CQC small maps were added over 5 years ago.
The average map size today is over 4km^2.
The average map size back in 2019 was ~2.4km^2.
Raw mapsize means little to nothing.
What’s inside the map matters significantly.
Sightlines? Routing?
Sightlines are far less than the absolute width of most maps.
It’s corner to corner peeking.
The average map size today sure is bigger that it used to because new maps have been added and I would like to play on them. It’s just the map rotation filter restricting certain maps to certain battle rattle ratings and the player filter of like/dislike/ban that gives us nothing but small maps. A lot of the maps have also gotten so many restrictions that they are effectively smaller.
The map rotation in the good old days used to be basically every map at every BR except reserve. Though that was the time when WT only had WW2 tanks. You would get the 4x4 km Kursk map at 4.7 and it was really fun because it was a well designed map for WW2 tanks and now its at 9.7+
Players liking smaller maps because it balances tanks better while reducing CAS presence and having more flanking routes.
Also early cold war tanks were part of the game since the beginning of ground, they just were top BR.
Kursk also was 3x3km.
Unfortunately a lot of players prefer the smaller ones. I would suggest having a opt in battle queue where the map rotation filter is disabled and any personal filters are disregarded so all maps of all sizes appear at all battle ratings. And if no match can be made with people opting in then you go with the normal match making.
Also Kursk was 4x4 km for tanks and 65x65 km for planes. It says so on the old Wiki from 2018
Actually that is my point, I didn’t address it well I must say. Modern MBTs just don’t fit in fucking Köln, or Alaska, or, god forbid, American desert, RB. Sands of Sinai is pretty good before. Now they fked it up.Map rotation is surely one of the things that god knows why gaijin decided to remove it(?) and map repetition just makes the game an absolute butt fluster. Maps like Kursk and Fulda Gap (especially the latter) in my opinion are incredible for MBTs, even at top tier (Maybe not quite so for Kursk). Even the bigger maps feel like they want you to go to the centre of the map for you to do more CQC stuff. Red desert for example. Everyone just go to the ridges and then piu piu. They can literally just extend the fucking maps that allow balances between flanking, sniping and CQC, say, Normandy. Just merge the Normandy and Fields of Normandy, you will have a very good and well balanced map to be fair. Sands of Sinai is a great map, because it does exactly that, until they fuck it up. I positively think wot actually have better maps than war thunder’s. But Vietnam should go to hell regardless.
When I watch some of my older streams and the 2km killshots we used to have, I shed a tear.
Not there and /or badly designed
lmao 1 staged Red Desert. spawn-nothing-1 stage of combat-nothing-spawn
I would love some more long range maps, as long as some CQC maps are in rotation you can have maps that favor NATO, and maps that favor Russia, balanced gameplay. Also I can imagine long range maps may make certain vehicles more viable than they were before. I like to imagine some enemy tanks holed up behind a hill and while most people cannot do anything against this enemy stronghold, some Chad rolls up in his Sturmtiger and annihilates it. I may be slightly biased though, as I love tanks like the conqueror that favor long range maps :)
