Ok so it’s been a while since I noticed that anything around 5.0 is purely unplayable atm because the matchmaking is terrible.
This bracket is the most interesting for me and i play it a lot with all nations.
Since on my previous posts about this I got rewarded by a “no issue here, there’s a 60/40% chance to get uptiered and downtiered”, I decided to do some actual stats this time.
Here are my stats for the USSR branch only. And in more than 40 battles, not ONCE have i been top tier.
So, what’s wrong with the matchmaking ??
Not trying to downplay your experience but ive been grinding the event using 34/85s and ive got plenty of downtiers.
Might be due to timezone? Ger 6.0 and 6.7 is rather popular so i can imagine that in certain timezones at certain times you might get nothing but uptiers.
Here are the possible BR match ups your 5.7 line up can face:
4.7 - 5.7, 5.0 - 6.0, 5.3 - 6.3 & 5.7 - 6.7
The first two don’t really count because at worst you could face a maximum of 4 @ 6.0 . . a single “step” means next to nothing.
The last two, yeah you might see a few higher BR’s vehicles than yours, but again . . not that many usually and it is by no means that big of an issue.
There is an event going on, players tend to play the highest BRs they can and still score decent to take advantage of the “multiplier(penalizer)” they use for the scoring based system now in place.
The other things you need to consider, the matchmaker can only work with what BRs the players have in queue at any given moment. Far more in queue with BRs slightly higher than yours and far less that are slightly lower than yours is a recipe for getting more “uptiers”. This common at any time of day, day of the week & whether is an event going on or not for whatever vehicle type you are playing.
And lastly, the matchmaker doesn’t keep track of how many uptiers/downtiers you have had. It doesn’t even consider such things. All it looks at is the BRs that are in queue and how to, as fast as possible, make games for the players to get into.
That’s it. The matchmaker doesn’t do anything to players, it has no ill will.
It has no feelings one way or the other. It’s all numbers and that’s it.
The matchmaker does not put you in an uptier, it puts you in a game where you can face +/- 1.0 BR
I think that players made up the uptier thing to compensate for not doing as well as they think they should in matches(an excuse) or not having “easy” matches all the time . . . or something . . . lol, I dunno.
I don’t even notice any of that in planes & tanks . . non issue to me.
I do however see the effects of that stuff in naval battles, as that game mode is in need of “decompression” far more than the other two . .
Just my opinion
Same. I challenged myself to grind out all tanks/planes in all nations (except isreal since it has 5.7 min.) all the way to 5.0/5.3. It’s a pain in the ass to even think about using the M6A1. It has less amor than a Sherman and has the largest profile I’ve seen in years. Point and click with a T-34 and there goes the ammo. God. And I face 6.7-6.3 all the time. Seeing Panthers and T-34-85 aren’t helping when you’re in a M6A1 trying not to get hit.
4.7 is extremely ded as a BR, so you’ll “never” get a full downtier as 5.7.
Uptiering is largely based on popularity of BRs due to the limits War Thunder has on amount of vehicles that can be on both teams.
Thx for the lesson i guess but i know how the MM works …
Indeed there is an event going on and it can probably explain some bad matches, but not getting a single top tier in 40 battles is a problem and it needs an explanation.
Also, i’m an old player choosing to play 5.7 but now imagine a new player reaching that level and always getting uptiers again and again. Bad experience imo and a motive to quit.
But then again, that’s an issue isn’t it ? You can’t really say to your players “welp no one is playing 4.7 so you’ll constantly get slapped by Tiger II”
If playing WW2 tech in a WW2 game is becoming tedious, the future isn’t bright.
Maybe add more low tiers vehicles or add bots to battles idk
5.7 sees mostly 6.7 in my experience, regardless of nation (I play 🇩🇪/ussr/usa at those brs). It’s disheartening to see a nuclear bomber in the lineup upon entering the match, but I’m starting to get used to it
Most 5.7s can deal with Tiger 2s in a tough spot if your own 6.7s are being less skilled.
Either way it’s partially player, and you just have to deal with that reality.
I like 5.7 myself, and the best thing you can do is prep your lineup for the maps and 6.7s you can see.
That is the major problem of the current matchmaking if you ask me. If your nation have lots of player in the queue the matchmaker is uptiering you quiet often, I experienced this myself too.
I don’t understand why the players are put together by nations and not by skill. The benefits I see with a skillbased matchmaking:
Less Up/Down tiering
lower queue times if only a few nations are present in the queue.
Less problems with russian bias/blind germans etc. because they would be splitted on both teams, so no more advantages or disadvantages based on you nations choise.
More balanced matches so they are less likely to end with spawncamping in the first like 3-5 min.
But how could skill be measured? I think KDA ratio should be good indicator, but I am not sure if that’s enough to define skill.
Having a matchmaking by nation maintains the little immersion the game still has and also allows for different tactics depending on your ennemy. In theory at least. And I quite like it.
However skill based MM is a strong no for me as it always tend to ruin games, look at For Honor for example.
Agreed it could lower sealclubbing but not that much since it will encourage smurfing and cheating a lot.
And the biggest issue i see here is the KDA you’re talking about. For example, French mains and some other minor nations mains are WAY better than average because they have to compensate in skill what their nation lacks. They are already very often punished for that with very average vehicles skyrocketing in BR so you also want to put the best players against them ? That’s double pain …
