What made the Harrier the most feared 3.5 Gen Dogfighter and why wont Gaijin model it correctly?

I play SIM it’s straight up not possible in game absolute max is like 25

Also no the Harriers IR signature is extremely hot in war thunder making it 10x more difficult to defeat IR missiles when compared to other jets.

Re-read what I said, this time paying more attention

The thrust issue?

They know how to fix it they did it with the F-117

The F-117 is a stealth plane, the Harriers aren’t.

IR signature is based off of engine thrust, this is true for ALL aircraft in the game. Hence why helis are extremely hard to lock with IR missiles since their tiny engines make very low thrust.

Excellent read if anyone is interested, covers a lot of fascinating parts of Falklands air campaign

Harrier IRL = super cold turbo fan

Harrier in game = Supernova

At bare minimum, the Harriers should be no hotter than any other sub-sonic single engined aircraft, like a Hawker Hunter, but in game due to their very high thrust (which is only getting higher in this major update), their IR signatures are some of the highest in game.

But between effects such as the forward nozzles dispersing the heat from the rear nozzles and the efflux from the wings, the heat signatures were scattered even further.

If the Harrier were to “VIFF” when defending, they would essentially turn what was a rear-aspect shot into a side aspect shot instantly, making defeating the missile far easier even still.

A final trick was to pull back on the stick as well, placing the wing between the seeker and the exhaust which, based upon accounts from the Sharkey Wards book, was enough to prevent IR lock entirely, even under the right conditions, including an Aim-9L.

Spoiler

Bringing up the F-117 is of perticular note, because whilst the Harrier’s full IR signature probably wont be possible to model for years, if ever (though the directional exhaust on the helis does present some hope of this sooner rather than later) the code used to model the F-117s IR reduction, could be applied to help normalise the Harriers IR signature, bringing it more in-line with other subsonic single engined aircraft.

Yes, it will. It can do STOVL good enough, it has better speed, payload, sensors, stealth, and is no slouch in a dogfight

Perhaps in the role of the fleet defense (though I think some of the porposals for the Harrier III would have given it a run for its money), but few aircraft truly match the CAS capabilities of a Harrier II like the Gr9. The ability to re-attack very quickly on a very stable platform that is also able to operate out of FoBs & off Carriers. Is virtually unmatched.

in air defence perhaps, but actualy airstrike and CAS it just cant keep up

I wonder what F-35B in beast mode does. And F/A-18. And A-4 Oh wait

Neither an A-4 or F-18 can deliver its payload land at a FOB and be en-route to re-engage in under an hour.

Extensive trails have been conducted comparing similar aircraft and they all concluded the Harrier was vastly more capable of delivering a constant barrage of ordinance with flexible and unpredictable basing options.

What are you talking about? F-35B has harrier beaten in a2g too

That’s why I said A-4 and F-18 not F-35

Yeah, that’s a great perk of all STOL/VTOL jets, their FOB’s can be used similar to swedens BAS-90 for rapid and quick turn around time, not to mention the fact that it was practically designed around the possible war at hand.

But that whole development of the jet is a long, and very intricate story.

The F-35 is also a 5th generation stealth jet…

Designed to be the next step of what the Harrier started…

Kinda, yeah. Harrier was a bit different in purpose at the start of its life.

Main design purpose of the harrier was to be able to take off and land anywhere in Europe at a moments notice and intercept incoming Soviet jets.

And in that process reduce your airspeed to zero, as what was moving you forward isn’t doing so anymore.

The DACT excerpts reveal pilots which, although experienced, had never fought a Harrier before, while the writer makes it very clear he was familiar with everything he was facing. Knowing your opponent is half the battle, after all.
The F-15 duo could have easily just… turned and left. Engage from further away with their better weaponry. Even the F-5s could do so, but that’s unproductive and above all, boring.

I do hope the Harriers can get buffed so they stop facing Sabres and start facing AIM-7Fs.
