What made the Harrier the most feared 3.5 Gen Dogfighter and why wont Gaijin model it correctly?

The Harrier was a rather interesting jet it was both subsonic and had high wing loading yet in USMC DACT was superior to an F-14 below 20,000 feet in a dogfight. In Fleet Air Arm hands the “Shar” was superior to F-15As, F-16s, F-5s, and whatever variety of 3rd gens you want to throw at it. Even after multiple combat training encounters the Shar frs.1 was still noted to have a 3/1 KD ratio over the F-16.

So the question is why has it always been utterly terrible in War Thunder?
Its simple really not much was known about it, and what was known was misleading. After months of research I believe I have all the information needed to model them.

This next major update will bring with it some MAJOR buffs to the Harrier family but these buffs will not even scratch the surface of what the jet was capable of IRL. Here is a short list of its IRL advantages and disadvantages.

Advantages of the Harrier:

  • Massive TWR
  • Small size
  • Smokeless exhaust
  • Extremely low IR signature
  • Good ITR
  • Extremely good minimum turning radius

Disadvantages:

  • Subsonic (Marginally)
  • Sustained G at transonic speeds

In War Thunder the Harriers have virtually 0 of their IRL advantages in fact some are completely 180 and add to its list of disadvantages.
The Harriers in War Thunder have a really hot IR sig making defeating even some of the most privative IR missiles a real challenge. Yet IRL it could defeat AIM9Ls rear aspect with a single flare pop.
Harriers in game have NO ability to VIFF SEVERLY limiting their close combat potential.

Vectoring in Forward Flight:
The Harrier had the ability to not only supplement its pitch rate (think SU27) but it could also utilize its thrust to directly aid its wing in creating positive lift.

To add to that it has puffer jets located all around the plane to allow controlled flight well below even what the SU27 can control.

VIFF abilities found is various sources:

60 degrees AOA pitch up obtainable and controllable in Gen 1 Harriers

19 Degrees a second ITR at 400 knots at a combat weight (on par with a lighter MiG-21)

Extreme decelerations around 57 knots every second in deceleration

Adds around 1 G STR while also minimizing the turn radius.

Where do the Gaijin Devs stand?

With some of my reports they seem they don’t even believe the reports made about the plane but who could blame them the scientists and engineers had a hard time believing it themselves.
This next major update looks like one step in the door to getting further buffs to Harriers and maybe one day they can do what they really could.

If they get to the point of having their IRL performance they could be a real contender at their BR ranges.
It would give them a fighting chance and opposing fighters would actually have to think before engaging as a dogfight with a Harrier below 20,000 feet could prove lethal to even the most modern fighters.

Feel free to argue, add too, and discuss I created this thread to try spread light on what the Harriers need to be buffed to in War Thunder.

In an alternate universe somewhere, britian was a major nation and the harriers where true to life ingame.

I love reading all the documents, some of the stats might seem impossible but why would they lie, this is secret documents not even to try and market the jet!

Overall, awesome post and i hope the devs work on this topic this year!

I’ll post some screenshots from sea harrier over the Falklands later and the F-5E Vs FRS1 and F-15A Vs FRS1 dogfights

Thank you would be good additions.

I have everything gaijin needs. Lol

+1 harriers are like in my top favorite aircrafts ever so it kinda hurts me seeing them implemented this way

Yes I really felt like pointing all this out after reading that the Harrier can pull 19 degrees a second at 400 knots.

While also being in a combat configuration with almost a full fuel tank.

Harrier was clearly an amazing aircraft because the MOD got rid of them. rule of thumb is that if the British govt drops something it usually was the best thing they had and should never have been scrapped

Yeah, current state of harrier jets are depressing, because they are such a cool piece of history and technology that isn’t properly represented.

I wish people understood this for more jets in general

Yes.
They told this to their pilots in secret to give them an idea of their ability to get home alive.

And by the looks of it the ability to win was high.

Sad, but true

The F35 will never quite be able to pick up where the harrier dropped off no matter the upgrades. We should have kept harrier 2, maybe made a harrier 3 instead of small and fat F22 from temu

Kind of the f35 is good for what it’s good for.

A Harrier 3 with a focus on air combat would have been fairly straightforward to be honest.

Just use the old blueprints to make new parts out of the latest composites. Add lerx to the Harrier 1 with a slightly wider wing.

All of a sudden the Harrier could be sustaining 7-8 G and pulling significantly more at all airspeeds.

You kinda just answered your own question, it’s a subsonic in the age of much heavier and more capable supersonics, before a time when FBW allowed them to ignore conventional flight. It also has far worse payload options than anything else listed - maybe except the F-5 - and more austere avionics.

Posts like these don’t help the topics they’re in.
Minor inaccuracies [major in the zone of simplified IR signature code] =/= improper representation.

@MatrixRupture
Excellent post, good sir.

There are some non-helpful things such as KDR, which is irrelevant to the topic IMO.

However, facts like IR signature being incorrect, and AOA limits are an excellent issue to bring up.
The high TWR in-game is a great advantage to its acceleration, but it does lack the energy retention and AOA it likely should have.

What question was I asking?

I was more stating it’s extremely more capable than what’s modeled in game.

What I am asking is why can it not pull 60 degrees AOA, why can I not pull 19 degrees a second at 400 knots, why is it so hard to flare missiles.

Yes I added the irrelevant stuff just for a bit of fun really but yes.

AOA, energy retention, TWR basically every major performance metric is missing on them.

Even a dozen Gr9s going into OP Shader would have been invaluable

Change to VTOL mode and the game will probably let you

For the same reason its impossible to lock onto helis with IR missiles until way too close
