What is the purpose of flares?

Let me clarify. The purpose of flares on USSR. SAAB whatever drops 1 flare my R60M goes off meanwhile I drop 10ish flares and crank it to avoid and it does ABSOLUTELY JACK SHIT

different flares have different sizes/luminosity and are differently effective as deterrents.
Missiles are also differently able to ignore flares. so it very much depends on what missile you are trying to avoid and how you do it. You cant just “drop flares and crank it” and hope for the best. there are tactics to use against specific missiles.
Range is also a HUGE factor.

Missile FOV is important. The little circle inside of the big one is the FOV, at closer ranges it’s smaller so less area to see flares.

I understand all that. I use R60M and the case where I got trolled was when I ate AIM 9L. I mean I dont complain about eating the heater but that the SAAB while flying straight 3 times in a row just dropped ONE set of flares without any manouvering and all 3 heaters went to shits

R-60s are famous for their incredibly sensitive seekerhead too. IRL they were defeated by flying towards the sun. That’s probably why you’re having troubles.

Aim9L can sometimes ignore flares in rear-aspect if your enegines are hot enough and the missile is close enough.

And dont spam flares. It creates a trail that the missile will follow. Best is to cut after burner if you have it, pop 1-2 flares, then turn.

this here is the right answer.

look just give the link to match or give more info, what was your range to target what postion and so on.

also watch the replay from all perspectives, his yours from outside follow the missle and and and.

I was chasing him 2.5-3 km behind him and gaining slowly, low to the ground no sun or stuff. I fire one R60M, he sees it, drops 1 set of flares, doesnt turn or anything, the missile wasnt terrain masked either, my missile goes off and he just keeps going. This happened 4 times, every time exactly the same situation I shoot, one set of flares comes out my flares go doofy and thats it. After that some other guy came to save him with a AIM 9L to the face. He was front aspect, dont know the range. I see him shoot, flare, turn hard right and down, half a second later my face is full of 9L

Yeah, this is on you. 2.5-3km in a rear chase would be ambitious for a 9L. For an R60M? No shot. They didn’t even need to flare there’s basically no chance your missile is hitting if you are going at any decent speed. Beyond that, yes a single flare is going to defeat any non-IRCCM missile at that range (and probably most of them too). This is 100% you not understanding how missiles work and wasting four missiles taking the same impossible shot over and over again. Given your poor understanding of how missiles work I also doubt your description of how you died. From the front aspect a 9L is going to get one flaired and miss even if the target stays flying straight 99% of the time. It’s only at very close ranges, but still outside the minimum range, where the missile doesn’t have time to chase the flare that it is still going to hit. Without a replay I couldn’t say what happened for sure but based on your description of your own shots it’s almost certainly you doing something wrong. 9L’s will on occasion keep lock on an afterburning target in the rear aspect (not even close to reliably though) but in the head on they are just a flareable as any other non-IRCCM missile.

You’re just not a very good pilot and don’t understand flares at all bud.

Or it just might be that I am going by the actual R60 performance and not War Thunder corrected performance. Seeing on WT Wiki what the range is on different missiles yeah, definitely my fault

Its also your engine heat. Maybe you tell me what plane you used?

MiG-23ML

?? What are you on about
