it might be its not a very swept wing its more optimized for low speed
look at the F/A-18 tons of thrust but super drag heavy
The F-18 has many more critical issues affecting its top speed and supersonic performance than the wing shape
cough canted pylons
cough poor area ruling
cough literally nonexistent thrust
