There are virtually no significant uses for it. At this time is also doing some very heavy lifting. It will be almost needed to be added before IIR functionality in missiles are added, which we can assume will be very soon.
From what all i know is that J-16D is a direct competitor to the growler. So it could be stronger, equal to it or weaker than it. Cannot comment about it now
The system’s range is between 50 and 80 kilometers, but could potentially reach up to 150 kilometers. Target identification is possible from distances exceeding 40 kilometers. However, weather conditions significantly impact the performance of infrared-based target search and tracking.
Where does it state that 150km is rear-aspect only?
150km. sure, but 65km for pretty poor weather, I think 100km for good weather wouldnt be totally unreasonable. That aligns with reports for IRST picking up F-22s during previous redflag exercises at about 50km iirc.
That is likely beaten by the upgraded PIRATE or Litening V which are both much newer
Thing is j16d has 6 total ew pods and a big chungus ass radar compared to the growler, which allows for a much stronger and a broader EW
But i still wont like these in game for now. Gaijin will likely implement noise jamming on these so the major thing they will do is prevent bvr. This will make the games more toxic and force more furbal wvr meta, where the rafale shines.
This would be good in teamwork, which is practically non existant in ARB
Because best conditions are rare. Its better to evaluate the conditions under real world conditions, which for the UK, is usually pretty cloudy. Flames’ report states that 65km was given in 3nm visibility
if the current PIRATE can detect an F-22 at around 40km (assuming IR signature is even remotely modeled correctly in-game) and the upgrade PIRATE or Litening V (if external IRST gets added) is better by lets say 50%, thats 60km detection range.
More than enough in-game to send a Meteor at the F-22 and probably be winning that BVR fight. Especially if coupled with the fact that half the challenge for radars is locating a stealth aircraft, not necessarily tracking it, so if ECRS is cued onto the F-22 by the IRST, it might be able to track it enough to guide a missile onto it.
Though again, that is a massive assumption that 1) stealth is going to be as good as US mains think it will be and 2) that IR signatures are even remotely modeled (whcih they arent currently)
and even if both are as agood as US mains think they will be. What stops the Typhoon just sitting in the notch, letting the F-22 waste all the missiels and then camping the AF when the F-22 goes to rearm?
Agreed.
Honestly doubt pirate would be doing worse than the ols-35 irst on su-35. In clear conditions it detects an non afterburning su-30 from 50km front aspect and 90 km rear aspect.
From what I understand, the stated figures for the pirate flame used in that report is for stormy weather, so I think pirate would be doing even better than ols-35, though I am unsure exactly what target the pirate is measuring against, as it could be any plane.
for example, when afterburning, the range is more than doubled for irsts from the 80s like the ols-27 on the su-27. goes from 10km non afterburning front aspect target to 50km rear aspect detection non afterburning target to 100km for a front aspect afterburning target detection. So, I don’t think something like the f-22 is going to be all that stealthy in IR if the all aspect afterburning detection is that damn high. OFC, all irsts in game are severely underperforming (none can lock past 30km in game due to artificial limitations)
Let alone the fact that IR Signatures are not modeled. F-117 does have IR reduction (a 0.5x multiplier if im remembering correctly) and is still hotter than an afterburning F-5 in rear-aspect.
So for all we know, the F-22 might be perfectly detectable at any range with any IRST if they uncap their range and I have no idea how well something like PIRATE & ECRSMK2 working together would be against something like an F-22 if half decent sensor fusion got modeled
