On the Japanese destroyer K-8 there are two spinning bulges on the top of the ship.
I’ve heard that there were so called “war tubas”, a megaphone-like device used to listen to enemy airplanes. But these look too small to be locating airplane engines, see the picture for size comparison with a man.
Specifically Horn antenna around the dipole aerial of the 22-Go aka Navy Mark 2 Type 2. The transmit and receive circuits were seperate hence two horns.
From KanColle library, its a surface search radar(cant spot aircraft, the japanese developed a separate radar for that purpose), first used on Hyuuga on May 1942
Using google translate on the jp wikipedia(no article in english), it could detect based on a July 1943 test trial aboard Yamato: capital ships at 35km, DDs at 16km and submarine periscopes at 5km

The Tx/Rx can be offset but need to be designed for it (eg Yagi aerials on some WW2 planes) but these should be parallel. Might explain why the radar isn’t working to specs on the game model.
Naval radars generally work perfectly…if perfect has a good slice of random thrown in on the rare occasion they actually work at all.
They really are a major negative as far as the ship modelling is concerned. Compared to the effort put in to getting the different models and modes for ground/air radars it truly is abysmal. Feels like even those that sometimes work are all the same set.
The air search radars and tracking radars are a copy of the ground radars, just missing some of the information from the x-ray view (e.g. bandwidth, radar, zone, capabilities, etc.), but the underlying configuration is there (only remember that a lot of those radars are extremely primitive compared to the stuff like 1RS2 radar on Pansir).
Doesn’t matter how primitive the radar is different sets will have different parameters. The result being operators, ie players, should get more than just a basic screen that feels copy pasted across the fleets that sometimes works and sometimes doesn’t. Different planes have different parameters, capabilities and screens, naval is one size fits all regardless of 1940s or 1980s.l with minimal tweaks.
Naval is short changed compared to the other modes, and it’s certainly relevant to the 22-Go considering it’s not even modelled as a radar at all. I am concerned Gaijin don’t have any real world naval experience.
I think the issue is that they simply don’t care to put in much effort, because naval makes them very little money. Just look at the Type 81, Type 93, Type 87, for example: all their radars/IRST are just copy-pasted from other vehicles (they were literally so lazy they didn’t even change the names on all but one), because very few players play Japan and so there’s not much reason for them to put much effort into the vehicles.
Gaijin don’t invest deeply to improve/correct because they think there’s too few players and too little £$€¥¢ in return, or that they will still complain regardless (which they will, but more about specifics rather than the basics).
Working surface search radar would be great, but so would air search and fire control that actually lock and track targets reliably.
I honestly don’t see thing changing anytime soon and the mode will remain on life support.
