Water World Event
Why Water World X WarThunder Event Would Work
Waterworld x War Thunder event would work because both worlds share the same themes of survival, resourcefulness, and brutal vehicle combat in dangerous environments. War Thunder already excels at combined arms warfare with naval, air, and ground vehicles working together, while Waterworld brings a unique post-apocalyptic ocean setting filled with improvised war machines, floating fortresses, and chaotic close-range battles. The combination would create a thrilling event focused on convoy raids, amphibious assaults, and massive naval engagements across storm-covered oceans. Gaijin has also already shown a willingness to experiment with unusual settings, gameplay mechanics, and cinematic themes. Events such as post-apocalyptic vehicle combat and naval-focused battles have proven that the community enjoys temporary experiences that break away from normal matchmaking while still using War Thunder’s core combined-arms gameplay.
Intro
Waterworld is a post-apocalyptic sci-fi universe set in a future where rising sea levels have completely flooded Earth, leaving humanity to survive on scattered floating settlements, rusted ships, and massive mobile fortresses built from salvaged technology. Society has adapted to life entirely at sea, with factions fighting over fuel, supplies, and control of the oceans using improvised warships, seaplanes, and heavily armed floating strongholds. The setting combines brutal naval warfare, scavenger-style engineering, and chaotic large-scale battles, making it a perfect fit for War Thunder’s combined arms gameplay and cinematic event design.
War For the Last of the Land!
No one truly knows why the Earth flooded. Some claim it was global warming, others say it was a failed project meant to tap the Earth’s mantle for water. Some blame an ice comet, the wrath of God, or even extraterrestrials. In the end, none of it matters anymore. The old world is gone beneath endless oceans, and humanity now survives among rusted fleets, floating cities, and the scattered peaks of mountains that still rise above the waves.
The last remaining land is controlled by the powerful and defended by feared mercenary groups known as the Smokers. Part pirate, part scavenger, part industrial fishing fleet, and part private military force, the Smokers dominate the seas through brute force and salvaged technology. They are among the most technologically advanced groups left alive, capable of fueling their ships with crude oil, fish grease, and homemade biofuels. Their floating fortresses and armed fleets terrorize the oceans, and few possess the strength to challenge them.
Beyond the Smokers are the countless survivors living aboard floating atolls and drifting settlements. These people survive however they can scavenging drowned cities, farming algae and fish, or siphoning oil from ancient underwater wells. Life is harsh, resources are scarce, and every storm or pirate raid can mean death.
Now war has erupted over one of the last great islands remaining above sea level: Everest. Some unknown incident has ignited a brutal conflict between rival island factions over possession of a mysterious data box tied to an ancient satellite network from the old world. Whoever controls the system may decide the future of the remaining islands forever.
To secure victory, both sides have hired Smoker fleets to wage war across the flooded ruins. Gunboats clash among rusting ships, seaplanes scream overhead, and forces fight desperately for control of floating fortresses and vital supply routes. In this new age of endless water, there are no heroes only survivors. Whoever wins may live like kings upon the last scraps of land left on Earth. Whoever loses will sink beneath the waves to rest in Davy Jones’ Locker.
Map
The event would center around a large-scale Capture the Flag style battle set across a massive flooded region inspired by the Hawaiian Islands. The battlefield would feature a large volcanic island industrial atolls, ship graveyards, and scattered salvager settlements. Hidden throughout the map are multiple ancient data boxes connected to an old-world satellite network. Both teams must locate, capture, and transport these boxes back to their faction’s mothership while preventing enemy forces from stealing them.
Gameplay would focus heavily on combined arms combat. Fast attack boats could raid enemy convoys, aircraft could intercept transports or launch strikes against flotillas. Once a team successfully captures and stores all of the data boxes aboard their mothership, the enemy team would begin losing tickets over time until defeat. If neither side manages to fully secure the objectives, the match would continue as a traditional Victory Point battle where map control and attrition determine the winner.
The environment itself would be one of the event’s strongest features. Inspired by the Hawaiian Islands, the map would combine volcanic coastlines, tropical storms, coral reefs, and massive floating scrapyards into a visually unique naval battlefield unlike anything currently in War Thunder. The setting would also give Gaijin long-term value beyond the event itself, as the map could later be reworked into a permanent Pacific or Hawaiian naval battle map for standard gameplay modes after the event concludes as some sort of WW2 what if Japan invaded Hawaii map for Land Sea & Air.
Vehicles
The Heavy Ships will be the main event Award 2 merchant Cruisers of WW2 vintage due to them being modified cargo ships. All vehicles will have a rusted skins and some modification just like in WarThunder Mad Max Event. All Boats will receive a harpoon gun to forcibly attach any enemy or friendly Boat or Plane to you.

The Point of the Event / Crossover
The purpose of this event is twofold. First, it would introduce War Thunder players to the unique post-apocalyptic world of Waterworld, a setting that combines naval warfare, scavenger technology, and survival in a flooded Earth. The film’s atmosphere and vehicle design naturally complement War Thunder’s combined-arms gameplay while offering a fresh and visually distinct experience from traditional historical battles.
Second, the event would provide an opportunity for Gaijin to experiment with aircraft and gameplay mechanics that may become increasingly relevant as War Thunder continues to develop infantry gameplay. In Waterworld, the Smokers frequently employ aircraft for reconnaissance, harassment, and attacks against small surface targets. These tactics closely resemble Counter-Insurgency (COIN) operations, where aircraft loiter over an area, identify targets, and provide sustained support rather than engaging in high-speed air-to-air combat.
Several of the Smoker aircraft, particularly their floatplanes and light patrol aircraft, could be used to test gameplay involving target spotting, close air support, convoy protection, and attacks against small, mobile objectives. Such mechanics could provide valuable insight into how COIN-style aircraft might function in future combined-arms environments where infantry, light vehicles, and unconventional forces play a greater role on the battlefield.
By combining a memorable cinematic setting with the opportunity to test new gameplay concepts, a Waterworld crossover could serve as both an entertaining event and a useful development platform for future War Thunder features.
