DECOLONIZATION / EARLY COLD WAR CONFLICTS
Continuing the infantry era discussions, a strong candidate for a new timeframe would be the Decolonization / Early Cold War era (1955–1975). Starting around 1955 makes sense as it marks the transition from post-WWII conflicts into full-scale anti-colonial wars and Cold War proxy struggles. This period is defined by asymmetric warfare, guerrilla tactics, and mixed equipment, where older WWII-era weapons were used alongside emerging Cold War technology. It would offer a very different gameplay style focused on mobility, ambushes, terrain use, and light infantry rather than large-scale conventional battles.
This era could draw from conflicts such as:
- Vietnam War
- Algerian War
- Cuban Revolution / Bay of Pigs / Missile Crisis
- Angolan War of Independence
- Mozambican War of Independence
- Guinea-Bissau War of Independence
- Rhodesian Bush War
- South Africa Border War
- etc.
In terms of gameplay, this era could introduce jungle warfare, rural insurgency maps, colonial cities, and mountainous terrain, along with equipment like early assault rifles, submachine guns, machine guns, portable anti-armor weapons, and improvised gear. Field modifications and adaptability would be a key theme, reflecting how forces operated with limited resources but high flexibility.
Overall, this era would bring a unique focus on asymmetric combat and terrain-driven tactics, offering a fresh contrast to more conventional WWII-style gameplay. Curious to hear what others think would this kind of era work in War Thunder, and what maps or equipment would you want to see included?
