WarThunder Infantry Eras Discussion (Late Cold War 1975 - 1991)

Late Cold War Era

Continuing the infantry era discussions, the Late Cold War period (1975–1991) would represent a major step toward modern-style infantry combat while still fitting within War Thunder’s combined arms focus. This era is defined by the widespread adoption of assault rifles, advanced anti-tank weapons, improved optics, and more specialized infantry roles, alongside increasing integration with vehicles and air support. It captures a time when militaries became more standardized and technologically advanced, but not yet fully digital like modern warfare.

This timeframe could draw inspiration from conflicts such as the Soviet - Afghan War, Iran - Iraq War, Lebanese Civil War, and the later stages of southern African conflicts like the Angolan Civil War. These highlight a mix of conventional and irregular warfare, often shaped by Cold War tensions.

In terms of equipment, infantry would have access to modernized assault rifles, light machine guns, designated marksman rifles, and a wide range of anti-armor systems, along with tools like night-vision devices, radios, and improved protective gear. Specialized roles such as anti-tank, support gunners, and reconnaissance would become more defined. Vehicles and helicopters would also play a larger role in supporting infantry operations. Some modern equipment would be in there early or prototype stage at this time but still sitting beside some Vietnam era friends.

Maps in this era could include deserts, mountainous regions, urban combat zones, and rural battlefields, often reflecting proxy war environments. This would encourage a mix of long-range engagements, ambush tactics, and coordinated assaults.

Overall, the Late Cold War era offers a balance between modern capability and grounded gameplay, introducing more advanced systems without going fully into contemporary warfare.
