War Thunder Should Rename the “Falkland Islands” Map to “Islas Malvinas” (At Least in Spanish or in Countries That Recognize Them as Such)

The only thing that should matter, is what the people who actually live on the islands call it and that is the Falkland Islands.

Correct me if I am wrong, but this can be addressed with localization, right? Exonyms and such differ by language used, usually.

That’s why I suggest to change the name to “Malvinas” for the Spanish community, not because of the conflict but even when you translate “Falklands” to Spanish literally says “Malvinas”, also, thank you for the comment. I really didn’t think that actually someone would even read my yap

Hi, I am new here so I’m pretty lost with the tags and stuff but I suppose that you are right, I don’t understood correctly how to used tags so I used AB an General

I’m not calling you out on what tags you used. What I was asking (and I think you confirmed) was that this is a localization issue (changing the in-game text differently based on game language). Such a fix would be great, and makes most “correctness” discussion (such as that from Morvran here) irrelevant.

Nah.
However, for the Spanish client I can support this.

Right now the Spanish language has the map as “Islas Falklands”.

As you proved here, Falklands Island is the correct name for the English language.

Thus the name should only be changed for the Spanish language version of War Thunder, and not the English version.

Thank you pal <3

I’m confused, do you want it to be changed to Malvinas on Spanish clients only, or on the clients of the countries that recognise it as Malvinas? The first is more likely to happen than the latter, if I’m being honest.

For sure makes sense to change for the Spanish clients.

I suggest both ideas

I dunno, the people who live there call it the Falklands so shouldn’t it remain that way in game? I suppose if it literally translates to Malvinas then maybe the Spanish local could change.
Regardless, I appreciate Russias hypocrisy regarding the situation.

I can’t really see an issue with changing it for the Spanish localization, but changing the names of things / places / entities, based on the subjective, political recognition of the country a user resides in, has the potential to become a very uncomfortable can of worms best left unopened.

I understand it’s just a map, but there are playable countries in this game that aren’t even universally recognized, so we need to be careful with the precedents we set, as this line of thinking can very quickly become a slippery slope into controversial discourse.

☝🏿🤓

idk how that is the takeaway with the thread being fairly cordial until the blood and soil spiel 2 posts above this

anything to take an underhanded swing at the western demographic I guess

If it’s just localisation, it’s not an issue at all.

This has serious “Gulf of America” vibes. Same nationalistic chest thumping silliness.

Just inplement the island as 1914 instead of 1982…
It will also make it be a new naval map

In France we don’t call these islands “falklands” but “Malouines” (name of the people who live in Saint Malo, who were fishermans known for living in those island). And if I’m not wrong this is where the “malvinas” name come from.

Well, the thing is UN recognises the territory as Falkland islands and the in the Spanish language as Malvinas…
So i don’t see the issue for the map in Spanish (ONLY) to be renamed, as it is officially recognised as well.
The Spanish name comes from the French name Îles Malouines , the name given by the French explorer Louis-Antoine de Bougainville in 1764… So the term is used way before ^Falklands^.

I’m not going political here and also i’m from none of these nations and i 'd recommend you don’t go political because we in the Balkans would be happy to assist you!!
But i understand that in different languages the same thing can be a different name/word.
Hellas/ Hellada/Ελλάδα - Greece -Yunanistan (Turkish language) -Yavan (Hebrew) - Grecia (Spanish /Italian) …
