War Thunder is probably the only game I have ever played where players can say literally anything they want and can only get in trouble IF they are reported after the fact. There is a chat filter built into the game, but it means nothing because all it does is censor the words and there is no follow-up after that. The chat censor feature is also extremely easy to bypass, so even if you turn this on you will still be assaulted by slurs constantly.
The game is rated Teen in the United States, there should be significantly harsher moderation on the chat, and it certainly should not fall on the players to report chat messages as, at least what seems like, the only form of moderation. Every single person I know that plays War Thunder has seen countless slurs and hateful messages in the chat constantly. Most players don’t even bother reporting messages like that anymore. The community has become somewhat well-known for it, which is sad as a lot of younger people play the game.
I don’t really care about insults and cursing and I’m not asking for a roblox-level chat censorship, but it’s been at the point for a while where I believe it is actively detrimental to the game.
I personally believe we need to not be banned for saying those words but we get filtered ABSOLUTELY for it. There is NO option to disable it and you’re forced to have it enabled.
I would like more punishments for clearly offensive stuff like slurs, but I don’t know how moderation would work without harming the overall experience.
I think having a stricter chat filter with actual consequences (like every other multiplayer game) would work fine. Like I said I’m not looking for everything to be censored, but the amount of vitriolic hate I see in the War Thunder chat is depressing.
I mean if you go too strict with the chat filter then you’ll get people banned for saying “Dicker Max, 12 o clock” and if you go too loose you get what we have now
Honestly, the amount of players I encounter using slurs is quite… astonishing to me, compared to other games or comparable sizes. I think there needs to be an auto moderation system, for instance;
1 Offence - Warning
2 Offences - Chat Mute for XX hours
3 Offences - Chat Mute for XX Days
4 Offences - Chat Mute for XX Weeks
I mean I don’t think “d***” needs to be censored unless you have a stricter filter option turned on, but I do think “I attend N**-N*** rallies” should probably not be allowed in a game played by children.
Exactly, its not rocket science, but Gaijin has this weird laissez-faire attitude towards the chat. They had the opportunity to fix it during the outbreak of the war a few years ago but instead they just turned it off.
I think that they need to renew chat censor BUT since it is an automatically turned on option players shouldn’t be banned for swearing… however
If you are reported in chat and your message is genuinely harmful, such as inciting violence, doxxing, threatening, use of derogatory terms, or genuine hate speech, etc, you should be given a ban.
For example, if I’m talking to a friend and I say “You’re a d*ck” that should be protected, but if I start calling some random the N word because they TK’ed me I should be banned.
The people who get offended by just simple use of swear words are either 70 or 10. WT is also much different to a library too
Notably, Ingame WT it’s considered more "fine’ to use langauge of the sort, but here in the forums it’s expected to be much more civil, which makes sense.
I do think the age rating of WT should be changed, but the whole “It’s rated teen” argument here is quite stupid seeing as most people learn swear words around 10 and will use them every other word until they’re 14. While sure, that makes sense, it’s player generated content. I can go on minecraft and call somebody much worse and the age rating doesn’t need to go up
Oh, theres also the added that it’s rated Teen in the US. Gaijin is based in Hungary, it’s up to the ESRB to take care of that, not Gaijin
AFAIK blocking people only prevents them from sending you a private message which is not an issue I mentioned in my post. It doesn’t stop people from posting slurs in the chat and insulting you.
This isn’t about me like you presume it is, nor is it some attempt to make the game some kind of roblox level censored nightmare. Before I posted this I watched as one of my teammates was insulted by 3 people from a clan who said things I cannot post here because I would be muted or banned. People shouldn’t have to turn off the chat in a team game so they are not harassed. The fact that I can’t repeat what they said here, but they can say it in game to other players without consequences is a problem.
