Vosper 73 foot Motor Torpedo Boat Type I, MTB 380
Vehicle design:
The Vosper 73 foot Motor Torpedo Boat was just one of many motor torpedo boat (MTB) classes designed by Vosper that served in the Royal Navy Coastal Forces during the Second World War. 19 boats were built in the 73ft type one group, and they were considered small boats compared to the longer dimensions of vessels such as the Fairmile D. This design was put forward as an improvment on the earlier MTB’s in royal navy service, as it was given the capacity to fight off other small craft, in a manner similar to a MGB. To meet this requirement, Vosper modified their existing 70ft designs, adding a heavier gun armanent, in the form of a single or twin 20mm cannon on the bow. this was suplimented by two Vickers K mountings for protection against enemy aircraft, and a set of four 18-inch torpedo tubes, giving it a decent versitility compared to the more role specific classes that predeceded it.
