Which, playing devils advocate, is one area where the US top tier could probably do with the little extra help.
Fighting something like the Su-30SM2 or Rafale where they have both good HOBS fox 2s & 3s in aircraft where your only reliable short range weapon is your Gun, is a tad annoying.
Whilst I agree that 9Ms these days do seem to be working better than they were, it still requires quite a niche setup imo.
sadly have to agree, because despite how much better it is, it would at MOST be a 15.0 plane that they may end up putting way higher and making it useless at whatever BR it is.
because if they dont add LOAL and keep current seeker ranges then all of them will have longer kinematic range but be limited on lock range
so not much difference there other than 9x pulling harder than many of the others
and if they do add LOAL 9x blk2 (the one already in game) is one of the few IR missiles to have DL, which with how often people turn in game is essential to hitting any sort of long range shot
It would still pull less than IRIS-T, MICA IR and Python-5 and would pull the same as ASRAAM.
With 90° Gimball and IOG, its not that big of a deal for most others to still hit HOBS shots without DL.
It is unlikely that the target would change so dramatically from its initial position for something like an IRIS-T to not be able to find the target in the 2-3 seconds it takes to do that turn.
Even ASRAAM, that is not designed for that kind of close range HOBS, is still not going to struggle with HOBS Shots at longer ranges beyond 90°, given it already has a 90°Gimball.
Even in longer range shots, the target isnt going to be changing position enough for it too matter. An ASRAAM at Mach 5 and 25km lock range (which is a conservative guess) is still going to lock onto something at 30-40km in seconds. You probably arent going to be firing many Aim-9Xs beyond 10-15km. Shorter range missiles like IRIS-T, have a lock range greater than their ideal kinematic ranges.
At the end of the day, All Aim-9X is is a Aim-9M with a new Seeker and TVC. Even the Block 2 only added lofting, not any changes to the motor. So even being generous, the only way you are hitting something at 25+km is if they are basically AFK
But Im personally of the opinion they will maintain the LOBL requirement, (and for DL IR missiles, that will include the seeker, not just a radar lock) as its a good way to fairly and evenly keep them balanced and is still more than enough HOBS in most situations. If they also put a soft-cap on lock range too, then its a good way to mitigate MICA IR and ASRAAM from dominating.
Im fully expecting though a whole host of posts asking for IRIS-T and ASRAAM on US Jets when they are added
again, given in game precedent (CAMM) it will significantly out pull it
yes but that is not the case for BVR where DL would be very important
look at the in game lock ranges, think closer to 8-10km will be in game front aspect
and it does not cruise at Mach 5 it may hit it for a short time depending on launch conditions, but it definitely wont stay anywhere near that for long
so unless they dramatically change IR seekers and the code behind them, expect 10-15s at least of IOG (with significant IOG drift because that is true for almost all IOG in game) for a long range asraam shot, and people in game do make significant maneuvers much more often than IRL
I dont know about that, with the current in game implementation a high speed high altitude launch should be very effective past that

which given that 9M can reach ~25-30km according to US navy it should be able to hit well past that (probably ~40km+ given how massive the changes to the missile are)
ASRAAM isnt in game yet and CAMM is missing 50% of its performance.
IRIS-T is also underperforming. Should pull 60G not its current 50G. The really big thing about IRIS-T that we dont see yet, is that low power state of the rails. So it turns tight off the rails before accelerating. Slower speed = better turn radius. In a short range dogfight, IRIS-T will be king.
Again. CAMM is wrong and reporting CAMM with ASRAAM sources is difficult because of the ground launch nature. When ASRAAM gets added there is going to be a load of reports for both. Though there are already a load of reports for CAMM and CAMM-ER
Aim-9M should already do more like 14km in front aspect vs a AB target, there is no reason why an IIR seeker would have only 10km. But then the Aim-9X would be equally restricted and then its Time to target which matters and ASRAAMs always wins with double the speed of a Aim-9X.
It doesnt need to though. Especially if we assume most shots will be more like 20-25km rather than longer range 35+
and equally under those conditions, dont expect Aim-9X to magically have the kinematic performacne to hit anything past 10km that is maneuvering that much.
It might be able to track it, but it isnt going to hit it. Its still an Aim-9M at heart. If a 9M can barely hit something turning slightly at 10-15km, then 9X isnt going to do well either, especially with all the TVC stability issues in-game.

and 40km+ is an hilarious figure given that ASRAAM that literally designed form the ground up for speed and range tops out at about 50km and MICA IR, a literall BVR missile with an IR seeker is 60km. The refitted Aim-9Ms arent going to increase the range that much. Block 2 gets extra range because it lofts. Thats it.
So sure, maybe against a slow, cooperative target. But against a fighter, doing anything but flying straight. Think more like 20km tops.
He’s saying that the AIM-9X in-game on SAMs currently has reduced drag over AIM-9M so there’s no reason not to expect it over the air-launched variants as well.
