Hmm… perhaps. But still frustrating as hell that you cant front aspect lock something, if its not on full reheat, unless its within about 1km with the Aim-9M, by which point, you cant even fire.
Given the disadvantages it has in terms of kinematics. Having a lock range advantage wouldnt exactly be unreasonable.

considering how much 27et lock range is underperforming, i highly doubt they’re gonna fix this kind of stuff. it would simply be terrible being beamed by a ir missile that was launched 18km front aspect
True, although i’ve never found it to be particularly bad when targets are on reheat, you can still get like 10km front aspect locks against afterburning targets.
I think the longest Ive ever gotten was 3-4km and even then. You are at the mercy of what aircraft you are trying to lock onto. Something cold. 3km is doing very well.
Quite frankly. We need an IR Signature overhaul ASAP
nah, i’ve gotten like 8-10 km sideish headon locks with 9m against super hot targets. straight head on tho, never more than say 4 km
and its those headons that a stealth 9M would be the most deadly in.
I cant count how many times the target has been in the LSZ and I cannot fire due to lock range issues

dude, you do know other ir missiles would gain MUCH more of a seekerbuff than 9m if they increased lock on range? 9m would be nothing compared to say pl-5e2 or aam3 or 27et
AAM3 IS different then 9M it has more range
no it’s the same in range band values
It’s seeker has the same rangebands and FoV, the only difference in the seeker is the IRCCM blink time/rejection threshold.

Would still give Aim-9M an advantage over Magic II and R-73 which are basically the meta missiles at the moment.
I dont think i’ve ever died to a PL-5E2 or R-27ET. Probably died to AAM-3, but they are basically just an Aim-9M at the moment
only thing thats different is that it technically has 0 delay for its irccm, but that basically does nothing
