Updating Names and Flags to match current nations

I’ve noticed that War Thunder uses nations old flags that no longer exist for 2 nations.

Russia (Formerly Soviet Union):

I believe this is from when there wasn’t a top tier or other flags weren’t displayed but now that the game has matured I think it’s time to update these to match their present time since they also include top tier vehicles and these nations don’t “exist” anymore.

I’m not an expert historian but, The flag shown appears to be the flag of Nazi Germany (the Third Reich), which was retired in 1945 when Germany was defeated at the end of World War II. It had been in use from 1933 to 1945.

After the war, this flag was abolished by the Allied occupation authorities, and its display remains illegal in Germany and several other countries to this day. I believe War Thunder used an altered non-legal version but looking at the game now it’s definitely time for an update.

The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) also no longer exists, and as the game has progressed it’s best to update them to their current flags.

I believe this would represent the nations better in todays War Thunder vs old War Thunder that didn’t have top tier.

You can do this already if you click the little cog wheel next to the autorepair/rearm toggles in the hangar.

Thank you, I’ll update that this should be the default vs adjusting in the cog wheel.

EDIT: Oh I see now, you need to first own a vehicle than you can change the flag, how weird. Learn something new everyday.

they did exactly what you said to Japan, in game Japan had a Imperial Navy flag, the Rising Sun Flag. but they only did this to Japan, that’s crazy.

You should be allowed to choose your Japanese flag

Nah it fine like this, I like it like this too. We don’t need to change it.

Technically it being used for the tech tree’s national flag was ahistorical since the rising sun flag was always just the naval ensign and army battle flag, iirc.

After you change it, it states the primary nation is still USSR. You can at least change the appearance, but I still believe it should default to the real nations of today.

Thank you for the explanation, but I already knew that - and I don’t remember asking for an explanation. I apologize for making you waste your time explaining this.

didn’t even notice that you can’t pick the historical Japanese flag or even have a altered version. Maybe it’s cultural with Japan.

That’s interesting, they kind of… banned the Rising Sun Flag from the game. It rarely appears in some profile pictures or decals, but it can’t be used as the country’s flag. as JuneQT said, you can use the flag in the boats too.

It’s still in the game in the one place it makes sense for it to be, the naval ensign for japanese vessels

I don’t know much about Japan or history but what I could look up is the rising sun flag was a battle flag. So their core flag never changed. The Hinomaru vs The Rising Sun Flag. In game US has their national flag and not military flag so it makes sense.

Yes, it is actually the navy flag.

I don’t think any other nation in the game has their war flag or naval ensign as their primary symbol so it was a weird carveout that I assume was largely the cultural downstream of ww2 allied propaganda conflating the two, as is usually the case. I think it was changed around when they added naval ensigns as a proper thing?

Whether it’s a war flag, naval, etc. you’re right all flag are their normal national flag so the game doesn’t include war/military flags from what I could tell. I still think at least for Russia it should default to Russia and if someone wants to change it to USSR that’s fine, but the USSR no longer exists so the primary name should at least be Russia.

Nonetheless pretty much all the “Russian” vehicles in game were designed and built by the USSR, NOT the Russian Federation.

Many of them were designed and built in countries that are now NOT the Russian Federation, since the USSR split into more than 1 nation.

It would make sense if the nations that purchased the tanks and made small modifications didn’t exist in game and just had their original country of origin flags instead. But as we can see from the game, that built and designed doesn’t mean anything if the country at one point owned something made by others. So the tank logic is flawed to say USSR built these etc. Sweden is a good example of copy and paste but has swedish flags on it. China too, and so do other nations which is fine but for the statement you made I don’t think that’s a valid case.

None of your cases involve the disintegration of a country as happened to the USSR.

They are irrelevant - you do not make a valid counterargument.

Actually China also changed their flag but defaulted to modern day china flag in game. Case or not I don’t think there’s really an answer we’re going to get as to what Gajin would decide on USSR default vs China Default.

I’m not a historian but either way, it looks like there’s too much history to bother on a video game. No point in discussing really

EDIT: From a google search this is Taiwan flag? I think this is a bit too controversial for WT Forums so I think it’s best to leave it.
