Are you in a raincloud by any chance?
I’ve had this once or twice.
I think it’s definitely a glitch/bug as the time on the map showed “dawn” for me. Also, if you view the server replay the game actually starts with the correct daylight showing, but then quickly switches to this quasi-night mode before players have joined.
Edit: the stars really showed up quite nicely though… as was my flaming death. Looked spectacular.

I have no idea what to say, but anyway it was quite an interesting experience to be able to play like that
There were proper Air RB night battles, waaaaaaaaay back-in-the-day. If it was a map with ships they’d have searchlights going everywhere, and if you got marked by one you’d be “blinded”. Looked awesome.
I thought it was good fun when it occurred (as long as it wasn’t too often, which it wasn’t for me).
Then did you have a square of proper lighting right below your aircraft? If so, I had a similar bug god-knows how many major updates ago.
