Maybe I’m wrong, but I’ve tried the Aim-120s, and the R-77-1 can’t compare. The Aim-120d outranges the R-77-1 by 20 kilometers (combined with the f-15s flying at the edge of space). I would launch at target 35km away that wouldn’t notch and the missile can’t hit. doesn’t matter how fast I fly, and i even guide the missile in before I break lock, it’s like the ARH doesn’t do anything. I really can’t go high because there is no way to evade the aim-120s when you go high. Maybe it’s just the Su-30sm. We need the r-77m, its dual staged, with a estimated range of 193-200km. Yes, it’s quite long, but we need a better Russian missile. The R-27er is better than the 77-1, only drawback is its a Fox 1 and you need a radar lock.
Are you in the SM/MKM or SM2?
The R-77-1 is one of the best missiles in game, But it’s slightly harder to use on the Bars equipped Flankers due to lower Gimbal.
I’d recommend trying this tactic. It’s less effective in the SM/MKM, but it’s still viable.
And no, We don’t need R-77M yet. It’ll probably come with stuff like MICA-NG, Meteor, AAM-4B (maybe not the AAM-4B since it won’t be nearly as good as the others)…
Yeah r-77-1 is quite mid in bvr, but it’s decent in close range.
It’s EXTREMELY potent within ~25km, which is where most engagements take place.
At close range, only the MICA outperforms the r771. The MICA benefits from thrust vectoring, whereas among conventional missiles, the r771 is undoubtedly the OP. Its performance in long-range BVR is limited mainly(compared to the AMRAAM, rather than other missiles) because it has higher drag compared to the AMRAAM series. Despite having a smaller diameter and lower mass, the r771 1’s total impulse is only about 2 kN·s lower than that of the pl12a, which currently has the highest total impulse data in the game (roughly 170 kN·s–172 kN·s).
RU TRVKE. R-37M is needed and the bmpt should also get it
Skill issue, entirely.
BMPT need R-77M too it’s underperforming.
R-77-1 are notably superior to even the Aim-120D in nearly all respects.
Yes the Aim-120D outranges the R-77-1. but if you cannot defend against a long range Fox-3, then that is on you. Most of the time, you wont fire an AMRAAM past 20-30km at which point the R-77-1 holds the advantage with better time to target.
When the fight gets even closer, especially when coupled with the extremely powerful HOBS radar on the Su-30SM2… The R-77-1 easily takes the number 2 spot in terms of Fox-3 Performance currently (and then you get 12 of the damn things)
The main advantage of the 120D is the 0 GNSS drift, It’s suuuuuuper good at hunting down enemies as long as you maintain a soft lock.
yeah, but that is about it, Ive not really found them any harder to notch and kinematically, the R-77-1 is superior in all but max range
I agree that the R-77-1 is better, but the GNSS definitely makes the 120D harder to notch, assuming the attacking plane keeps a soft lock on you.
And that’s a big assumption, since most people just spam off 120Ds like they’re any other 120.
Maybe thats why ive not really noticed any differences when defending, but I do want them on the Typhoon
As soon as it isn’t used solely by US mains you’ll notice it lmao.
But yes, stuff like the Typhoon should also get it, hopefully with the Fin-AOA fixed as well.

I’ve found that if someone fires pl-12a/aim-120d from above you and maintains soft lock, it’s basically impossible to defend from the missile and the plane at the same time cause the moment you notch the missile, the host plane just continues sending dl updates to the missile and makes it still hit. It’s why they’re so good in early game bvr.
If someone fires an aim120d from below you it’s basically as easy to defeat as any other missile.
Might be another reason why Ive never had any issues. Im usually the one above. I rarely drop below 20k ft
I’m also usually around 6-9 km altitude, but in something like the su-30mkm (basically the su-30sm that doesn’t have the upgraded engines of the sm2) you’re forced to go to lower altitudes when defending in order to not lose all of your speed. So in those kinda planes you feel the gnss against u
Missiles in look down mode were the meta since the aesa radars were buffed. Aim120ds didnt change much in that regard the missile will still prioritize chaff.
Migan and catwerfer were the ones that made me aware of this
I pray this is just ragebait
The R-77-1 is only just the 2nd best missile in the game
