The new damage model of bombers is too tough

IRL. An F-16 clipping a tree (and not just branches that break easily, but the actual solid part of a tree) is more than likely going down, whether that is due to physics being physics or the damage causing issues forcing the pilot to eject.

The issue in-game is that the tree models are mostly just air, with the really dangerous, solid part as an unmovable brick wall.

Coupled with the damage models being a few large pieces… and a glancing blow is usually guranteed death.

Though note, I have hit a tree before and survived in-game. Just what you are in and what part of the aircraft the tree hit is what matters,

The main trunk or just the canopy?

Those are 2 radically different things.

you see in war thunder you hit a tree you wings fall off instantly and you jet catch’s fire the tree STOPS the jet or makes it do a 180 and crash

90% of the time you hit the tree you die unless you’re going like 20kmh.

my jet should be with the trees phyiscs and me going mach 1 it should be nothing left after the fire but a crater and overly burnt metal

20kmh isn’t possible while flying

I can not tell you gajin how satisfying it would be to see my jet crash and do damage to a line of those crazy trees like it would irl envorment damage JUST not to buildings for obvious reasons

If you clip the branches, nothing happens. Because they arent modeled.

If you hit the main trunk… What do you expect to happen?

Quick and dirty math and some light oogling. An F-16 with a mass of about 20’000lb traveling at 500 knots impacts with something like 150k kN. A tree can withstand somewhere around 50-500 kN. Sure the tree is probably breaking from that impact, but I seriously doubt that the wing is surviving either, or any other part of the F-16 come to think of it. Unless you are saying than an F-16 is able to withstand a 150k kN impact.

I’m not saying it shouldnt break I’m saying its annoying and unsettling how it breaks when I hit the main trunk if I even hit the very top of it it breaks instantly maps with too many tries make mutipathing impossible with trees 200 feet tall for some reason which is annoying and how it breaks is more annoying it should break the trees and stop quickly I woulnt care if it was low quality but how it does a 180 crashes breaks my wings and invinsable trees is just annoying

a Frangible damage model for trees I just dont think is something that is required, and maybe the direct impact on aircraft isnt entirely realistic in-game, but my experience is that all the “weak” parts of the tree, including the very tips, arent impactable, you clip straight through them. The result is that if you actually impact the part of the tree where you would more than likely sustain critical damage… you actually sustain critical damage, and whether you instantly explode, or have your wing sheered off and you crash 5 second later into a field or another tree is kinda irrelevant.

But none of this is overly relevant to the topic of the bomber damage models though

Bro - u changed your gamertag - but your tone sounded familiar 😎👍

Even as i don’t share some of your (imho slightly too radical) views the core issue is right on track - a lot of bombers are way too easy to kill - especially those without cannons in turrets.

But i disagree regarding “wilderness for 3 years” - make 6 if you consider the change to respawning bases (Air RB) and imho at least 8 for replacing delayed B kills with instant A kills - these “ripping tail off” effects are just the result of this change.

It boils down that gaijin tries to sell a solution for a problem they created by own decisions - and struggles as usual to find the right balance as they obviously don’t play their game.

A little bit off-topic:

In case you want to have some fun with base bombing in Air RB - use your FR-1 with sea mines. I had a lot of fun with it - even as fun is relative when you play in US teams at the wrong point in time on the wrong server…it became my go-to plane for base bombing tasks when i was tired of using the B7A2 and the B-18B - correctly played you have a way larger impact than in a B-17 / B-26 and a way higher survivability.

I described a recent battle here - the replay link is included here and should give you a hint about the best tactic using it - i turned a 1 vs 4 in a win just based on positioning and the speed advantage of the plane - despite i needed 13 (!!!) API-T hits on my last enemy (Yak-3 made out of stalinum).

Have a good one!

Meanwhile, gougin raised the BR of the T18B…I have no faith that they are actually doing anything to benefit anyone but themselves…

Well in that case if the bomber is coming to you like an idiot, remind him what natural selection is. These damage models are strong without a doubt - but they ain’t immortality.

I remember playing as the bombers the last time this was the case. At the time I was simply looking for open space to just do my thing in a mode I was able to matter in - I wouldn’t hunt fighters intentionally, but I damn well would defend myself if attacked.

I had the idea in the ongoing thread on Naval stuff, where I first came up with the thought regarding the frankly overkill-strong AI gunners on player ships. Like a goddamn PT boat will almost accurately snipe a bomber out of the air 5km away with 20-40mm autocannon fire. A named player-bot, not even a player.

And then after thinking on it a bit it naturally extended to the other problem Gaijin never really solved with AI gunners - that of bomber/attacker/heavy fighter gunners.

All automated systems that kill players have been proven in Gaijin’s hands to be unbalanceable. The moment they are “good,” players start relying on them to swat down opponents. Yet being shot down by an automated system that allows idiots to escape the consequences of their own careless stupidity is about as anti-War Thunder as it gets.

The game needs fighter mains to be put in their place, and objective structure set up so no single plane class is able to win games by itself. Fighters should definitely keep inflicting significant ticket losses, but they alone should not be able to end matches - otherwise what the hell is the purpose of everything else that isn’t a fighter by design or the multirole payloads that exist on the majority of fighters?

I blame folk like you for scream-nerfing all nonfighters into oblivion whenever they DID happen to matter instead of bothering to consider people who DON’T just fly fighters all day looking for the next guy to have a dogfight dick-measuring contest with.

That’s just it - for the most part, I don’t.

What I personally enjoy is playing ground attack aircraft. When an enemy bomber climbs to space to evade otherwise certain death, it gives me the time to do what I please.

Any day the toxic fighter mains starve and “no active players left on enemy team” doesn’t trigger is a victory in my book.

I’m not a bomber main though, considering your tendency to descend into stat-shaming, feel free to look at mine. I fly pretty much everything below jet tiers due to the gameplay quality falling off a cliff past 8.0.

There is no other way to force games to end via the actual objective instead of “no active players left on enemy team.” That win condition has always been THE problem.

And why wouldn’t most people, who are usually grinding something, not enjoy shooting bots? It’s literally free real estate. Oh sure you can’t have your dick-measuring dogfight with a bot because a bot has no dick to measure, but seeing folk like yourself starve is a good thing.

Because folk like yourself are why the gameplay of Air RB has deteriorated into such stale slop. Every time a nonfighter became semi-important, folk like you started screaming how “OP” it was that you actually had to do something other than 1v1 dogfight for a change. Until Snail rendered the “offending” plane as worthless as all the others. Repeat over and over until maps got gutted, planes got gutted, weapons got gutted, and objectives got gutted.

But then the best part - folk like you THEN PROCEED TO COMPLAIN about those same bombers being useless deadweight, when your complaining is precisely why they’re deadweight!

Yes, and real pilots had what, a 2% hit rate? Ingame we achieve 20-50x as much? Therefore having bombers be correspondingly more durable just makes sense, especially given their objective has been neutered to the point of total irrelevance.

There is zero excuse to not give bomber gunners the exact same lack of spraying as fighters. That is lazy logic blanket-applied to nerf gunners. Might be true in certain cases, but it does not fit War Thunder.

Right now they’re so pitifully weak you don’t even have much time to use your gunners manually, and your gunners spray so much that hitting is an exercise in frustration.

I only speak for myself here, but what I personally want is no single plane class to be able to unilaterally end matches. I want every plane class to be able to matter, every single match, without question. I detest AI gunners of any sort - people who do not pay attention to their surroundings should be jumped and obliterated. I detest bright red enemy markers for the same reason. I detest the shoebox maps that start feeling cramped as low as 3.3-4.0 props, nevermind higher.

This will force fighters to choose much more often “yeah I’m gonna cut grass and ignore the bomber to pull the rug out from under his ass via tickets.” And if Gaijin is remembering how badly for the game nerfing them originally was, they would be wise to expand upon the various objectives so PvP TDM is no longer required in the slightest to win games.

I can almost guarantee you the YB-40 will be added as a Dreams Come True vehicle soon enough with damage models like this.

Toxic Fighter Mains need to burn for the damage they caused to the mode over all these years. Their endless fucking screaming every single time a bomber or attacker was able to win Air RB games on a semi-regular basis is why the mode deteriorated. Snail listened to their cries, kept nerfing their objectives, and now finally after so many years the very stale mode that resulted must have driven enough of said folk away that now crying in the other direction is being seen as majority opinion.

As a fan of bombers, I kinda want a bit of revenge. Not to the point of rendering fighters useless or anything close to that, just making it impossible for TDM to end matches by itself. That way once the last plane dies the very Toxic Fighter Mains who survive are now forced to get their hands dirty cutting lawns if they chose to not keep their team’s own bombers and attackers alive to do said job.

Thing is you may not know the entire history here. Fighter main whining is why bombers became increasingly frail and worthless to match outcomes. They kept on whining until every possibly shred of utility was gone from the planes. Then the same people proceeded to keep whining about how they’re now deadweight taking up fighter slots, completely blind to the fact that they themselves made them that way.

this logic completely breaks when you put missiles in the equation btw

Yes it does - I have zero explanation as to why Snail did what they did there. But probably the reason is to ensure future premium bombers will live long enough to be effective.

Anything to get revenge on fighter mains for sterilizing this game mode however is music to my ears. Especially because the same people who sterilized it then later turned around and complained it was sterile, totally bereft of their own culpability in causing such. Thus they deserve to burn. Permanently.

ok buddy calm now that’s not gonna work out the way you want to lmao

They made half the air trees in every nation effectively worthless for the better part of a decade. Is it not more than justified, knowing their selfishness and ignorance of what they did, to not put them in their place and upend the objective setup of the mode so their own stubbornness keeps them there until they change or leave?

Such folk are not the types worth compromising with, and their past behavior proved such.

The TB-3, H6K and other super low BR 4 engine bombers will definitely be the strat for maximum bullying. Especially the TB-3 that basically fights a grand total of ~5 planes that can kill it in a reasonably fast amount of time (and all except for one of them are 2.3 BR so you won’t be fighting them all the time)

G8N is decent because it’s quick but there are Tigercats and jets waiting for you with rockets and lots of big guns.
