The end of War Thunder

Is This It?

Recently, War Thunder has been turning into an extremely greedy, pay-to-win game.

For example, the last Golden Eagle sale was only 30% off, compared to the 50% discounts we used to get. The recent Xbox Summer Sale was also only 40% off instead of the usual 50%. It may not seem like a huge difference, but over time it’s clear that Gaijin is becoming less generous while continuing to charge players more.

Not only that, but Gaijin has also started keeping previously rare vehicles permanently available. Look at the A-6E and the Milan. These planes used to be considered rare and special, but now anyone can buy them. Why? Because Gaijin knows that keeping them in the store means more people will purchase them, resulting in more money.

Another issue is the sheer number of high-BR premiums, especially for the USSR. The USSR currently has six Rank VII premiums and two squadron vehicles. I’m not saying these vehicles are bad, but in my opinion, premiums were originally meant to be additions to your lineup, not replacements for an entire tech tree. Now, you can practically build a complete top-tier lineup using only premiums and pay your way to the endgame.

This creates another problem: any player, regardless of experience level, can instantly buy their way into top tier. As a result, both Air RB and Ground RB are filled with players who don’t know what they’re doing. This causes two major issues:

  1. They hold back their teammates.
  2. They make the experience worse for themselves by jumping into high-level gameplay without learning the basics.

The last issue I want to address is copy-paste content. There is simply too much of it. It feels like Gaijin is becoming lazy with what they offer. A perfect example is the Senrai Maiden packs—they are exact copies of existing tech-tree vehicles with little more than a different skin. And it’s not just those packs. With almost every update, instead of seeing new and exciting vehicles, we get existing vehicles rebranded and placed into different nations.

Some people might say, “There are only so many vehicles they can add.” And to some extent, that’s true. However, if you visit the War Thunder forums, you’ll find hundreds of vehicle suggestions made by players. The community is actively trying to help Gaijin by providing ideas and historical vehicles that could be added to the game.

The problem is that it increasingly feels like Gaijin cares more about making money than listening to its own community.

I have to grab the readers attention don’t I

Anyways, the “business wants to make money” isn’t surprising at all. Every other game does it in some capacity, War Thunder isn’t (and shouldn’t) be expected to be any different

GE sales being x% will always differ depending on the year, so it’s nothing crazy. Sometimes it’ll be a specific figure, but not always as we’ve seen

I don’t see the problem with making rare vehicles permanently available??? Like that should be one of the things people complain about the least lol.

High BR premiums are expected by now. For the time being Gaijin has avoided 14.0+ premiums, but even those are likely to come in a future where a vehicle can’t really fit in the tech tree of x nation and the top BR increases to around ~15.3. Also, a player “buying their way to top tier” is entirely their choice end of day. No one’s forcing anyone to buy said vehicles near top tier.

“Copy paste” when the vehicles themselves have minute but sometimes very noticeable differences 🫠

I get what you’re saying, but look at the squadron vehicles we got last update.

The MiG-29N has no business being a squadron vehicle. First of all, the USSR already has a top-tier squadron aircraft, so adding another one feels unnecessary. Second, the MiG-29N would fit much better in the regular tech tree, where players could actually progress toward it naturally.

Then there’s the Gripen D. If you look at Sweden’s strike line, it literally stops at Rank VI. So why couldn’t the Gripen D be placed there? It would be the perfect opportunity to extend that line and give Swedish players another vehicle to grind for instead of locking it behind the squadron system.

No, this is not the end of War Thunder and I doubt there will ever be any soon. War Thunder is holding off as dominant title among vehicular combat titles alongside World of Tanks and a few portion of Armored Warfare, War Thunder being a free-to-play title, is no surprise that Gaijin will try to squeeze the most amount of money.

What makes War Thunder to overshadow these others is the appeal for a more realistic environment, the bombardment of sponsorship and the easy controls compared to other titles like IL-2 Great Battles: Clash at Prokhorovka, Steel Beasts, Gunner, HEAT, PC! making it more accessible for the public looking for a sim-cade experience instead of a pure arcade gameplay like World of Tanks and similar titles.

If the downfall of War Thunder is marked purely by the monetization tactics used by Gaijin then this game should’ve been closed years ago, this is not the first time. They’ll probably come with an excuse this or the next week or wait long enough for the heat of the moment cool down and people forget about it until the next year when they decide to add an specific vehicle as a Premium and so on everything repeats and nothing changes.

May’s discounts has always been 30% of not 50%

Those also used to be avaliable to every one before they take them off of the store, there no reason for them to be permanently unavaliable for new players after all these premium can’t be traded like the event vehicles.

I think you should like to watch TheCodMineMan’s recent video on this issue.

Here’s the link for anyone interested:

Is Mig-29M, Mig-29N is the Malaysian Mig-29 in Japan TT

cause we need to keep the gaijin market place aka a mini stock market going as they make more money

MiG-29N is a vehicle in the Japanese TT. MiG-29M is what I think you mean, and even then this update we got the tech tree version of it (which should be better equipped IMO, but it’s not) in the MiG-29KR.

Gripen D is functionally the same as the 13.7 Gripen C, except iirc it lacks a gun and is a two seater. It would serve no purpose in the TT where the Gripen C already does the same thing.
